I think it is quite easy to deduce from a. Loss of water due to mucus b. Loss of nutrients due to mucus forming. that the mucus must be advantageous for the corn otherwise it would have been bred out of existence, unless there was another possible advantage of mucus forming other than n fixing, which Doesn't seem likely, being the n fixing is an organism that does just that. I do wonder if the amount of n fixation is fairly linear to amount of mucus formed though.
