Greetings friends and family! Buffaloberry here, also Blake, my real name. I need your help in finding more types of corn, beans, squash and stuff the Potawatomi, Miami and Illinois nations in the Calumet region of Chicago and Indiana, off the shores of southern Lake Michigan. I'm continuing to focus on indigenous food and medicine from my community farm to edify and educate folks for the better, while helping local wildlife with their habitat. Much Love!

I already have Miami white flour corn, Potawatomi white and red Flint corn, Potawatomi mix corn, Illinois Tamaroa white and red stripe flour corn and Shawnee white flour corn, which the Peoria nation use in Oklahoma. Beans including Potawatomi Lima, Potawatomi pole, scarlet red runner or bear paw, Odawa pole and bush beans, Ohio pole, Miami-Powatawomi cranberry, Lamberson beans from Arkansas, where the Illinois used to range and Miami cornfield. Squash and watermelons, including, Illinois and Potawatomi red seed watermelons, Gete Okosomin squash, green stripe cushaw, Miami spotted pumpkin and yellow crookneck. Others include, wild tobacco, Potawatomi cowpea, Jerusalem artichoke, common milkweed and Russian mammoth sunflower. I'm missing black Mexican corn, Jackson Lima bush bean, Shawnee sunset squash, Tamaroa Flint, Illinois white crookneck, and genuine cornfield bean for the Illinois. Miami, I'm looking for Miami gray pumpkin and a few others I don't know yet. And for the Potawatomi, Red Lake Flint and Walpole island corn, Potawatomi pumpkin, Potawatomi tobacco and few others I don't know yet. I'm still on the hunt for more Miami spotted squash and Potawatomi red seed watermelon to plant for next year. I'm also looking for more Illinois types I don't yet know to help create a strong seed bank for my restoration garden to give back to the native communities. Is there anybody out there who would help me find what I'm looking for? Thanks!

Buffaloberry here to thank you for showing me where to go to correct. I got all the stuff listed for the Miami, Potawatomi and Illinois tribes, and I'm looking for more new ones for the Calumet region of Chicago and Indiana, off the shores of southern Lake Michigan. Please don't let my name change confuse you all out there. Just focus on the topic at hand. Thanks!

Sorry gang for my errors and not replying soon enough. Buffaloberry here to let you all that I've straightened out all my problems including my name and password. My list for the seeds I already have are Potawatomi white flint, mix and Miskigwat (red) flint corn, Illinois Tamaroa white flour and red stripe flour corn, Miami flour corn, Ohio bean, Potawatomi lima bean, Miami-Potawatomi cranberry bean, Miami snap bean, scarlet runner bean, Odawa pole bean, Gete Okosomin, Miami spotted pumpkin, green stripe cushaw and Illinois red seed watermelon. I'm missing some Walpole Island flour corn, Red Lake flint corn, black Mexican sweet corn, Tamaroa flint, Potawatomi pole bean, Potawatomi tobacco, Potawatomi pumpkin, Jackson wonder lima bush bean, Miami gray pumpkin, genuine cornfield bean, Illinois white crookneck or cushaw, Shawnee Sunset squash, among others not named. I'm also searching for more Miami spotted pumpkin, Miami Potawatomi cranberry bean, Odawa bush bean and Potawatomi red seed watermelon, if anybody has those out there. I'm not saying all should be found, but I needed some help in obtaining those. Is there anybody out there who has groundnut, man of the earth or wild sweet potato and wild leek, all native wild rooted edibles to the Calumet region of Chicago and Indiana off the shores of Lake Michigan. I've waited for days waiting to hear back, but crickets so far. Please let me know if anybody found anything. Thanks!

Sorry for the lateness of this response, I don't check in here often. Miami Potawatomi cranberry bean Odawa Bush Bean Red-seeded watermelon (described originally from the Gun Lake Potowatomi) Miami Green Spotted Squash Oddly enough, all of these are being offered this year by a single SSE member... is it coincidental that you are seeking these in particular? You can browse their descriptions without joining SSE, but would need an SSE login to contact the lister: SSE Exchange listingsIf you are unable to acquire these by any other means, send me a PM; but be patient, as I log in here infrequently.

Thanks. I've also looked for more Miami spotted pumpkin, Potawatomi Lima and stuff from Great Lakes staple seed and Tony West from Ohio, among others. I'm looking for more folks on a broader scale for all the varieties I'm looking for. I've listed some heirlooms from the Illinois Confederation including that red seed watermelon and a couple of Tamaroa corns from the late John White from Ancient Lifeways Institute in Illinois, who died 14 years ago. I don't even know who the man who was at that time before he passed away along with his wife Ella, leaving their children Jonah, Karli, Mark and Jennifer on this earth. You also know Barry Haglan, a seed saver from Iowa, who was one of John's closet friends, and Kevin Finney who used to work for the Jijak Foundation from the Gun Lake Potawatomi band in Michigan? I wish I could get to know Kevin a lot better, and has anybody on this board know him? Are there any folks out there who have deep Illinois or Miami tribal ancestry who have studied or researched intensely on the agricultural and ecological history of both tribes? Please send me some feedback or ideas to help restore the true ethnobotanical culture of both tribes in the Calumet region and beyond. Thanks!

It's okay. You're no pawn at all Zeeman. You were just doing what you can to help me search for the right ones for my region. I'm looking for more people who absolutely know many other types of heirloom crops from the Potawatomi, Illinois and Miami, besides the ones Zeeman just named from Seed Savers. I just heard from John White from Ancient Lifeways, that he had some black Mexican corn, Jackson Wonder Lima bush bean and possibly Shawnee sunset squash for the Illinois, along with few others. I'm looking for types of heirloom seeds or crops from the Illinois Confederation, if anybody has studied or researched the types of crops they grown before and after European settlement. I did all I could to search for historic documentation and so forth to find the right varieties for my garden, but the search gets too tiring and time consuming. Could somebody please help me identify which is which historically in order to make my garden become more athentic as it can be? Thanks!

Back again. Crickets so far, huh? I'm looking for black Mexican corn, which the Illinois used to grow centuries ago before the Iroquois came to raid over their territory, Walpole Island flour and Red Lake flint corn which the Potawatomi used before, some more Miami spotted pumpkin and Potawatomi watermelon, which I'm in need of for next year. Is there anybody out there who has those to trade with? Thanks!

Happy 2021 to all on this board! Back again to await for those who have more info and historic sources for the Potawatomi, Miami and Illinois nations, agriculturally and ecologically. Anybody would like to share any research or anything with me to aid me on my restoration gardening journey? Thanks!
