This year I returned to planting a LOT of corn again; vermin turkeys have been demons in the past years, did not know they were in my neighbor hood down South till last year so took, and will take more drastic measures, if deemed necessary to stop that problem.
I have two gardens fifty miles apart, with Black Gumbo soil down South and sandy clay up North.
Planted down South:
Sweet:
Breeders Choice
Country Gentlemen
True Gold
Gold Cross
Kandy Korn
Silver Queen
Dent:
Lorenzo's Corn
Blue Ridge White Cap
Up North:
Sweet:
Festivity
Martian Jewels
Field:
The common multi-colored indian corn.
The sweet corn up North looked very, very good, was supposed to be only 5 or so feet tall but I am six feet tall and it was a foot higher than I am, THEN, we had a strong wind from a storm.
The corn stand is bordered on one side by a fence and I am supposing the wind bounced off of the fence as the corn looked like a dust devil had hit it, SO, yield was reduced and after standing and tying up the stalks as best I could, some just snapped off, I was guaranteed a some would be Festive Martian corn.
I got a little less than two dozen ears out of the two patches (they were planted very close together)
I picked the last of the sweet corn up North and it is actually very good, leaving a few cobs for squirrels this winter.
Sweet corn down South should be hitting picking peak the next two weeks and as no wind racked that corn, should be a good yield.
We are short 5 inches of rain so I used sprinklers a LOT this year and the gardens are best in quite some time.
