What does "antho" mean? The google doesn't seem to find it in anything plant related. What does the tri-cot indicate, regarding how they will grow, produce seed or pollen or other possible impact for breeding? Why might it have shown up in the first place? 10% with no special treatments and with less than what I was thinking were likely required temps and in a short time. That bodes very well for my goal of being able to start them in a cold frame like I do most other stuff. I'll be starting mine very soon and may split into two groups, about 100 inside for insurance and 100 outside in the cold frame. Maybe an easy to grow from seed SP landrace isn't so far off after all. I believe he's referring to pigments called anthocyanins. Providing the reddish color.

I have a very pretty violet cultivar called "Freckles". It is well behaved - to the point where I wish it would spread more! Wow. Nice!

I never could understand why people wouldn't want clover in these yard. When I was young I built a flower bed over a tree stump to cover it. Planted a few relocated perennials and a couple Violet's that I dug from the yard( 12, poor, and no acces to anything outside our own yard) but those violets took off in that bed, they took it over in a couple years. They were beautiful. I was just looking at some violets yesterday in the yard and was thinking about doing the same.

Thanks Keen. If I'm grasping it all correctly I think that may answer my question.

Grasping at the technical and genetic insanity that is surrounding corn cross pollination. I have to ask, if you cross a su corn with an se corn, do you loose the se and end up with a su hybrid?

I stumbled on to some really great melons this year. They most definitely had deeper orange color, in the flesh and seeds both. It's interesting to me, if that's an indicator than that would be helpful for selection. I have one set saved from a single melon that seems to have a mix of whiter and more orange color seeds. I think I'll deprecate them by color and see what the results are. Joseph Lofthouse I totally agree templeton. That does seem to be logical, and I will test it out this season. Thanks everyone!

Not sure where to post this question, so I'll post here. Has anyone growing canteloupe ever noticed a variance in color on the better tasting melons? It may be coincidental but I have been saving seed from all the great tasting melons, as well as the not so great(I eat the seeds..) but I noticed recently that the seeds in my "good melon" stash tend to me a more orange color than the "bad melon" seeds. Any thoughts on this? If there was a correlation, that would make seed selection easier.... Lol

I'm a longtime lurker, new to joining. I have toyed with growing my whole life, I was the kid my mother would shake her head at because I always grew from "the pantry" so to speak. Saving and growing seeds from everything that came through the kitchen. Of course the potatoes and anything else I couldstick in the dirt. Looking back i wish I'd have kept up with my instinct instead of focusing on life as a teen and getting out of the dirt... Oh well, I've been back in for at least seven years now and finally have a bigger yard to convert to growing. I aim to grow as much as possible to provide all I can for myself. I dream of substance farming, And self sufficiency. I mainly have seeds I've been saving from named variety tomatoes, I have noticed a variation in one, I plan to grow as many seedlings this year from the variety so I can pick out any more that show the variation. It has a slightly more regular leaf look to the potato leaf it should be displaying. And the fruits are smaller yet more consistent shape with similar favors. Oh well, it's one trait to explore.. I tend to save many more seed than I plant, this year I plan to start many more than I let mature. Let the culling begin...
