Hi,
Has anyone grown this before? My package says to plant another se variety next to it to increase pollination. I've never read that before on a hybrid corn seed pack before.
I know all colors are pretty much dominate over white, but is red dominate over yellow in corn? Just wondering.
Thanks.

I have grown ruby queen. Both as a market crop and also it is part of my breeding experiment mix "Astronomy Domine" sweet corn. It is exactly the same in characteristics as Silver King sweet corn and taste isn't much different, of corse minus the added benifits of the red pigmenation to the benifit of the human body.
I don't remember my old packs saying anything about planting with another SE type however. My guess would be that this probably has something to do with the color contributing parent of the corn actually being a dent corn rather than a sweet corn and is just something to "spruce up" the taste a bit, only my guess, but I do know that one parent indeed was a red dent corn, which is strange considering that there are a number of pink and red open pollinated sweet corns already.
If you do plant another SE type I would go with white however. Red is dominate over yellow but it also can effect the color and give rise to off colored kernals (greenish). However you will probably end up with a bi-color corn anyhow, regardless of what color you plant next to it considering that it all depends on what grain of pollen lands on which strand of silk in the first generation. However if you were dehybridizing or segregating this corn to come up with an OP equivelent you would definetly want to go with a white since it is a recessive trait.
Hope that makes sense and hope I didn't ramble to awful much.

Thanks for the info Alan. I think I'll try your "Astronomy Domine" sweet corn next year, if you'll let me (buy or trade seed). I just have too many corns to try this year with seed I want to increase. Keeping it pure will be a royal pain around here. I've heard sweet corn pollen can travel miles.

I'll happily send you some seed for "Astronomy Domine" Version 2.0 this fall for the 2009 season free of charge. I think you will really like it and in time I really think this corn could be a terrific variety!

Alan,
Thanks. I look forward to it. The corn seed which was the wrong one I got from Peace seeds was "Martian Jewels selected for pink and gold seeds." I had ordered 2 ozs of it which came out to about 260 seeds. If you like to add that to your mix, I can send you 50 seeds or so of it. Just PM your address and I'll get it out to you.

I am totally ignorant re: plant breeding but I'm wondering if I need to grow a sweet corn next to your AD corn this season to make the flavor nicer THIS SEASON? or is that just for saving for next season??? Thanks for any clarification.

Michelle,
No, you shouldn't need to do that. My pack said for better production of corn. The AD should have enough diveristy in it, but I hope Alan will chime in soon.

You don't have to plant anything next to it and you should still have some nice SE genetics. However for my market plot I will be planting alternating rows, one of AD and one of Silver King, White SE corn which will be de-tassled. The Idea behind this is to have the Astronomy Domine colors on ears which resemble Silver King and have the Sugar Enhanced taste and quality of Silver King to take to the farmers market. I hope that helps. Seed could be saved from either of the rows or both and kept seperated or bulked together depending on what one would be searching for.
Pugs, I'd definetly like to add Martian Jewels to the mix, I'll send you a PM shortly, thank you so much for the offer.
Your Friend, Alan
