and I no longer think that humanity is doomed. I was expecting the worst, and was pleasantly surprised by how great the kids were...granted, I was in the Alegebra II and pre Calculus class. Last class was pretty heavily geeks and dorks, with talk of Star Wars cards. Now, all you geeks and dorks, don't take offense at that, I mean it in the best way!!!!

That's cool! I find the kids in New Mexico are generally better behaved then the kids I used to encounter in California. New Mexico is a bit old-fashioned, and it makes a big difference.

I know we were at our worst with subs in HS. Even in AP classes. We were nice if the sub was young-ish, interesting and attractive, though. Maybe you are just a hot teacher.

When we lived in Virginia, I did a lot of long term subbing. I was an Algebra teacher for 3 months, a Latin teacher for the better part of a year, and a GED instructor for an entire year, part time. There were some fabulous kids, and some who were destined for prison. On the whole, though, it was an enjoyable experience.
Glad you had a decent experience, Plantsnobin. How often do you sub?

Sorry, didn't see your question until today. That was my first time at the high school. And I had only helped at the elementary once. I was traumatized by the elementary experience. I was assisting with the special needs preschool, which is in the same hallway as the K and first grades. I thought the teachers were horrible. I know the kids would get on your nerves after a while, but damn. If you can't do your job with some compassion, it is time to get out. It didn't help that my nephew was in that hallway. He hates school, and he had been sick that morning. Dad thought he was just trying to get out of going, till Dad got sick the next day. Anyway, as I am walking past Jericho on the was to breakfast, he is looking all pitiful and asks me if I am going to be at the school all day. He of course gets in trouble for talking. I think that to a large extent our children are herded like cattle, and just expected to sit down and shut up. Made me want to home school him. Sorry for that rant.
Oh, and I am hot, NOT. About as wide as I am tall. It's more that they all know my daughters and are afraid of them. We all look really mean, but we aren't. Just an Abell family trait.
