Now Michael, us women know that the nerdy men are the best kissers! I actually had a date tell me once that he knew what women want and that I should have enjoyed his kiss because of that. The nerdy dear ones bother to find out what you actually enjoy and then do it. Fulenn

I know for few russian varieties which descriptions say - storage 3-4 months, but usualy they are not among best tasting varieties (which of course is a rule for most long storage vegetable varieties). Hi all - Small Shining Light is a Russian variety that keeps astoundingly well, and performs very well in my melon challenged climate with no coddling. I've had the fruits sit intact on a shelf in the kitchen until April. If left that long, the flesh is not anything you want to eat. It's good to eat through December maybe into January from September harvest. The flesh is very dry for a watermelon, which is probably why it keeps so well. Eating quality decent, but remember that I'm a desperate cold climate gardener who is thrilled to get any melons at all. To be fair to the melon, the flavor would probably be better in anyone else's garden where the fruits would get more heat to ripen... Also it may be a matter of figuring out when this variety is at it's prime to eat. It is an "icebox" sized watermelon, round rather than oblong.

Extremegardener, I hope you will have some extra seeds for that watermelon. We would like to try it.

I have grown a watermelon which keeps about 3-4 months, and tasted better, although a bit dryer for the last few, as they aged. None went bad, we just finished them eventually (January)
But instead of growing them this year I am trying Minnesota Midget muskemellons. I only saved seeds from the last watermelon so I dont have too many. The melons themselves were only about 4 pounds and really dark green, almost black.
I have grown blacktail mountain and this is not it. Would like to try that one sometime though. Have a pack of those seeds in my freezer for some years experiment.
