I grew Carolina Cross last year. We got 40 + pound melons from poor soil. Considering they were not fully ripe when they were picked, they were still pretty tasty. Maybe this year we will all be calm enough to wait for the fruit to fully ripen. Let's hope at least.

Hey Cortona,
Same problem here with long keepers.
Watermelon and Strawberries and Green Fleshed muskmelons are my favorite food, I have yet to really keep a long keeper, but I should try.
I would like to try some of the yellow fleshed kind, yellow watermelons are really my favorites and to have one that would store would be amazing for me. Let me know if you still have some to spare.

Somewhere I have a few seeds of AU Golden Producer which many claim was the best golden fleshed watermelon ever. Unfortunately it never found a commercial market and no commercial seed has been produced for at least the last 10 years. I believe Tim Peters sold the last seed he had about 5 or 6 years ago and that was old seed. I grew out some of his old seed (less than a 10% germination rate) a couple of years ago, isolated the plants and produced two small watermelons before winter caught up with me. I didn't even get to taste the melons because they had not fully developed but I do have what appear to be mature seed. So, if anyone wants a few seed to try to keep this variety alive, just send me a pm.

For yellow fleshed watermelons, I've had good luck with Tim Peter's Cream of Saskatoon (his version of Cream of Saskatchewan, I think) . Nice flavor and it keeps pretty well, too, though not as long keeping as Small Shining Light.

Pretty looking flesh and I like that it lasts well. I think I grew a different version of Cream of Saskatchewan and it did okay, pretty sweet, but it didn't last long ... cause I ate it. In the future, I'm going to have to try Tim's version.

This year I will be growing my old stand by OrangeGlo I don't know how long it keeps because no matter how many I have they get eaten rather quickly. I wanted to get a smaller pink or red fleshed variety that was called Royal Golden that has a green rind that turns a golden yellow when ripe, as my 10 year old grand daught wanted her own watermelon garden. I couldn't find it in time to order it and was unable to get it locally so she will have to grow the OrangeGlo insted. I like the sweet orange flesh that it has, although it can get a bit to big for the refrig. George

Is it quite a bit different from Saskathewan (which is one of my absolute favorites)? If the taste is similar but the keeping quality is high and you have a few seeds I'd love to get a few from you sometime.
