I just decided to order a refractometer to mesure the brix of my melons. I'll also use it on other veggies and fruits of course. It will be fun, and also practical.
When tasting 2 or 3 melons, your mouth can be a good guide, but with all that stuff, good measurements will be way more important. As I will work with corn too, it will also help. The organic farmers that stepped in my corn project use them to mesure the sugar in their corn.
The largest canadian organic dairy coop, ''Organic Meadows'' stepped in, the regional rep, whom I met in a Canadian Organic Grower meeting showed a lot of interest in it and found people to help. " other farmers are helping on top of the coop members, one that might convert to organic, one that owns a farm in Northern Ontario that moved here and will start one this summer, organic of course too.
The increase in protein content is a big driver, as is smaller corn, which greatly augments inter-cropping possibilities, because of light penetration. It looks like my ''dwarf corn'' intuition was a good one.
