My squash seems to be growing sloowly this year in Ottawa. Anyone else notice this pattern? It was a late start in the spring due to weather.

Mine too here in the Kootenays. Really cold spring, and then all of a sudden it was 30C (and above) almost literally over night, so they got burned pretty badly and are just started making a good comeback about a month ago.
The thing I'm really noticing this year is the way most (not quite all, but most) of my Cucurbits are sending out female flowers before the males even open. I've NEVER seen that before.

A little farther south than Kelly, but the same late start for the cuccurbitas, although they are now making up for lost time. We've had normal male first flowering, to an extreme on some of the more vigorous sqaush - - - 6 feet of vine and no females yet, but males everywhere. We also have a bush banana with the largest leaves I think I have ever seen on a squash plant, and it has now started to send out a runner with tendrils, which is very un-bush like behavior.

we're slow here too. we've had 20 degrees higher than normal temps (90's) and i'm thinking it's stunting some of the plants. the poor melons are still baby plants loaded already with blossoms. weird year...

My squashes are averaging about 10 to 12 foot of vine so far, with as you say large flushes of male flowers and not many females, The giant English Marrows have three female flowers open and I spent some time pollinating them yesterday, they have criss crossed the garden and one cheeky little number even forced it's growing tip through a patch of tomato vines staked on strong stakes and is now trying to climb up amongst the tomatoes-poking it's growing point up into the sky by about three foot or more

You know, I think I might have noticed both female and male flowers at the start which I normally don't. Interesting. I'll have to look closer.

My plants are so far behind, I doubt I will see any fruit this yr. This is the worst season in the 11 yrs I've lived here.

There is a possibility that it might not ripen here either. In fact, my entire garden iis not what it normally is. On a plus side, I had one ripe Japanese Trifele tomato.

Wow - my Japanese Black Trifele just started BLOOMING, nevermind fruiting yet.

Kelly, any luck with the Fantome du Laos? I think I spelled it right. lol I only have fruit on the cherries and currant. Oh and one plant I bought at the cooperative extension sale-which was mismarked.

Flowerpower - The plant is doing really well, very healthy looking and TONS of blooms, but I've had a bit of bud drop due to the absolutely roller coaster weather we've been having. I think I do have a few that have actually set. I've had some other varieties that normally don't have any bud drop suffer as well, so it's not just the Fantome. A lot of my other tomatoes do have fruit on them, but STILL nothing ripened yet. And it's almost August! AHHHH! This is unheard of!
