I just read this -> "In an unreplicated trial in May 1997, we planted in cold soils (6 F, 5 cm deep, 20 seeds per variety). PM showed 30% emergence after four days of daytime solid temperatures above 10 F, 22 days after planting." www.agron.missouri.edu/mnl/72/08kutka.htmlAre they serious? 10F? Maybe I should be out planting corn. It is 47F outside.

I don't believe it. I think possibly someone switched "F" for "C", that would make more sense. I grew PM last year and have a lot of seeds. You know I am gonna plant some outside in the freezing weather just to see tho....

Yeah 10C = 50F That sounds about right. Does anyone know what average daily air temps are needed to get 50F soil temps? On average the daily average air temp where I live hits 50F around April 11th but the average low is 38.8F at this time. We don't get average lows of 50F till May 31st. It looks like they planted at 42.8F soil temp.

Happy: I live just north of you, just across the border from the tip of the Idaho panahndle. I think we have very similar climate, with cool nights through the summer, and in excess of 100F possible most of the summer. We generally consider around the 10th of May to be plant out day, but if it's something considered cold hardy, maybe mid-April, for fava beans, I'll be trying the third week of March next year.

Thanks Grunt, this will be my first year gardening here and things are going to be much earlier than in Moscow when I would have to wait till June. I think I will do some early germination tests in April but wait till may to plant most of the corn. Also my soil is completely different. From rock hard clay to DEEP fine sandy loam. I was amazed when I first got here and left the hose out to flood the dead lawn, an hour later I returned to find all the water was going straight down and it was bone dry within a foot of where I put the hose. I'm kinda worried about water. That lawn is in danger though if my wife does not water and mow it I will plant more garlic and fruit trees next fall.

Your garden looks awesome grunt! Nice and sunny! I hope the trees here don't shade me too much. I'm lucky that the large trees are to the north of me. I took out a couple trees but need to take out a few more tree of heaven and old fruitless mulberry trees. I will definitely be keeping an eye on your blog.
