I planted it last fall . "Naturalized" muscovey ducks. They'll gouge out half of a ripening tomato on a regular basis too. Anyone have any ideas of how to protect it this season? I'm looking to plant a 50x3 foot plot... Naturally the cost of the venture is an issue, but all ideas are welcome!

Is it possible to cover your crop with bird netting? The kind that they use for berry trees? I have found that it is useful for keeping wild animals out of my tomatoes.

Duck tastes good, and those are a good sized one. They are also an exotic, so you should be able to simply kill them. Exotic birds here are specifically not protected species with no seasons.

lavandulagirl: The bird netting I've seen in the catalogs look to be 3/4" square. I think thier beaks will fit right through that.
darwinslair: It has certainly crossed my mind... I'm still skittish of extracting the inedibles... My honey is willing to do the shooting, not the butchering. He says he can't handle the stench. I suspect his mamma pierced some inards of the chicken that shouldn't have been.

Now if I have trouble with birds in my grain sorghum, that's a solution...may get that before I find there to be a problem! However, is a duck prey to an owl? I think ducks are too big to worry?

easy way to deal with smells you dont like:
Vicks Vapo-rub. Put a dab of it just under your nose. You wont be able to smell anything else until you clean it off. Old-time solution to dealing with dead bodies. Overwhelm the senses with something else.

vapo-rub...Thanks! Also, I might have a solution for my wheat. Ordinary bridal netting from the fabric store. Throw out the seed, cover, weighing down the net with boards....We'll see.
