The marker I was using is Sharpie, so it's more like a dye than a paint. It doesn't seem to affect the pericarp or the wrinkling. However it doesn't work very well on any color kernel other than white and yellow.

I look forward to hearing what your test shows. Watch to see if the marker ink has affected the pericarp and the appearance of wrinkling. I remain pretty confident about last-to-commence-wrinkling working, but first to re-hydrate, if it works, would save perhaps 200 hrs. of work. I finally got around to doing this test. Results are at: alanbishop.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=corn&thread=4981&page=5#88858I still firmly believe, contrary to the authorities quoted on this thread, that on segregating cobs, sugary enhanced kernels dehydrate quicker... The fine wrinkles are definitely visible very early in the drying process.
