Steps on Soapbox rudely...
*clears throat*
Okay, one thing that really has me going today is false advertising. So i found a supposedly new edible-podded purple pea today available from the U.K. There are several mirrored articles that appeared in august this year, all claiming that this purple mangetout is the first purple podded of it's kind. The article's title makes it sound like it's the first available purple pea in existence which we know not to be true. But it's also NOT the first mangetout purple-podded pea bred. I know of at least two (which i'm currently growing or will be growing next spring) Alan Kapuler's 'Sugar Magnolia' a purple snap, and Dan Quickert's 'Midnight Snow' snow pea.

First of all i'm angry when people start making claims without doing the research. And okay, in all fairness, on occasion i've been guilty of that myself. And on first glance that's what i thought this was a case of. But, now i'm not so sure. I'm wondering if maybe this new variety might have even be a stolen copy of Alan Kapulers work. Maybe not, but here's a part of the article that really pisses me off a little...
the "top secret" breeding line has me a bit suspicious. And even if it turns out to be a case of overbloated marketing i'm still pissed off when i catch people doing false advertising. False advertising in general pisses me off though.
...steps off soapbox.
having said that, I look forward to having some seeds of this variety to add to my other pea trials next year. It may turn out to be the best purple-podded mangetout that has been bred so far. Who knows.

Now a new shade will be added to the mix as experts have developed a first-of-its-kind purple mangetout.

The Shiraz pea plant - which can grow up to 3.5ft tall - has been created through a complex and top secret breeding process and contains no artificial colours.
