I just placed an order with Johnny's Selected Seeds. Some of the people at some of the forums were talking about boycotting Johnny's in response to Rob Johnston's actions on the SSE board.
I looked at my catalog and saw all the smiling faces of the employee owners of Johnny's and thought that even though I don't usually order from this company that I should show my small bit of support for them.
Rob Johnston has sold the company and I felt that everyone should support Johnny's and not allow our feelings for him to destroy the hopes and dreams of these nice people.

I agree, LoreD ... just don't try to use the same logic on me if General Motors becomes employee owned :::smile:::

FWIW I visited Seed Savers on business Thursday morning. I spoke with a highly placed person (not a board member) who is close to both of the principals involved. He indicated that while the situation had been difficult for him personally, he believes it is for the best. He told me that we should give Seed Savers about a year, and they will show that nothing has fundamentally changed either in the mission or the doings of the organization.
He also pointed out that you can't take over a not-for-profit like you can a for-profit corporation.

I still have a problem with 'non-profits'. If any group is selling something, it is a business, plain and simple. Profits earned may be going for some 'good' cause, but it is still a business and should have to play by the same rules as every other business. Yep, I don't even think Girl Scouts should be able to compete unfairly with Mrs. Fields. I have a plant business. I wouldn't want some group around me to be able to solicit tax free donations to build huge greenhouses, display gardens and retail space, and sell plants. I think all those years ago, Kent did a good thing. That was simply providing a way for seed savers to exchange info and seeds with each other for good reasons. It became something other than that. It is certainly not unique to SSE. Look at how many other things started out with the best of intentions, then they grew into something else entirely. Honestly, I think that with the internet and peoples ability to communicate with other people all over the world, SSE is not all that important. The seed saving cat is out of the bag, and people everywhere are exchanging on their own. As it should be.

... all the smiling faces of the employee owners of Johnny's ... Rob Johnston has sold the company ... GREAT point! Thank you, Lored! Boycotting Johnny's misses the target. You'll hurt innocent folks. I buy from Johnny's nearly every year.

(A "highly placed person") also pointed out that you can't take over a not-for-profit like you can a for-profit corporation. Yeah, in the case of a not-for-profit, apparently one might need a harlot in the woodshed, a CEO with weak resistance to temptation, a rich heiress with time to dabble in the garden, ten easily swayed MOTB, a staff of Philadelphia lawyers, and all the other components of a cheap pulp novel. Or something along those lines. Maybe it would be easier to take over a for-profit corp. or single proprietorship. Anyone want to try a hostile takeover of Baker Creek or Bishop's Hilltop Germplasm? ;D

Umm, BC would probably be a much easier target ... doubt if there are any working guns there.
Now, BHG might be packing bazookas as part of their defense system ... I heard the owner is a little unstable ...
(j/k Alan ... put down the grenade ...)

He also pointed out that you can't take over a not-for-profit like you can a for-profit corporation. No but I know from experience that missions and focus can be changed or even ruined (and this is usually done by a change in the board members).
