This is my first time growing it.
Are shoots good or bad, and what is the cause?
Thanks for reading.

This is my first time growing it. Are shoots good or bad, and what is the cause? My general philosophy is that however a plant grows is good. The extra shoots often grow a cob or two of corn to harvest.

Sideshoots generally are positive. In a good year, they don't hurt the plant. In a drought year, they feed nutrients to the main stalk which can result in a larger ear at harvest. As Joseph says, they will often result in an extra small ear of corn.
An ear of corn is after all just a side shoot.

Believe it or not I have a stalk of glass gem corn that has two tillers as tall as the main stalk. On these three shoots are nine ears of corn. I took a picture today. When I get time I am going to post a section with all my pictures from this season. Gray

Picked two identical ears of corn off an Early Sunglow and its tiller today. Almost every seed of that variety produced 1 to 3 tillers. During the drought, they were given just enough water to survive so I think that the tillers definitely helped by providing more roots to search for water.
