The word poppycock comes from the Dutch word for packed dung or strawpack. So when you say "That's a bunch of poppycock," you're saying in a softer way, "That's a load of ____." you must hear that a lot....

So how is that better? It's the same meaning. Why can't I say bullshit? It's ridiculous and totally random IMO. Those idig people are truly insane, as are all people who arbitrarily make words "bad". It's all about intentions, not words. UGH. I'm so tired of people. Sorry, awesome homegrown folks. The word poppycock comes from the Dutch word for packed dung or strawpack. So when you say "That's a bunch of poppycock," you're saying in a softer way, "That's a load of ____."

I'm pretty sure it's a lot worse... the linguistics resources I have say that poppycock isn't packed poop, like WU says, but LOOSE, runny mess. (The Dutch word pappekak is related to the word pap, for soft baby food, linguistically.) So when you tell someone "poppycock" you're actually saying "diarrhea". Nice....
Truly funny, though, that people with a mistaken idea that they should protect us from saying "BS" on a supposed family site would change our word to "diarrhea". Perhaps we're being edited by 9 year olds.

Houseodyssey, if you MUST cuss, why not be creative about it? Instead of bull, why not say sheeps*** or coyote-s*** or ground hog ****?

Kid of like instead of saying penis, use the more politically correct "Big Floppy Donkey Dick", you know, that sort of thing.

I want to make it clear that when I made the above statement, I meant that 9 year olds find diarrhea extrordinarily funny, not that some mods on idig are in fact the mental eqivalent of a nine year old. It has come to my attention that I offended Randel, whom I do respect. For that, I have apologized, and I hope to clear up my meaning to everyone else now.
Sorry again, Randel! Now stop lurking and join, dude.... you know we on the dark side always have more fun!

Well, Lav, I want you to understand that I'm not holding that post against you because it was unintentional poor wording, but it is a good enough example for me to say the following...
This has gotten out of hand, in my opinion. The Mayberry stuff is fun, but there have been some rather nasty things said on this thread (and some others) that are out of line. No, I'm definitely not a moderator, and yes, I may have been a part of it myself at times. But I think what Lav said some time ago about not saying anything about others online that you wouldn't say to their face is a good rule of thumb. I think it's time we sat back and thought about how hurtful some of these comments may be before we type them in. Frankly, some of it is shameful.

...I don't say anything on the internet that I would not say to someone's face...I MIGHT be a little more delicate (and that strictly depends on the situation), but for the most part, what you read is what you get....
