Indeed so; we'll none of us get out of this alive, but we must persevere, if only to poke a finger in the eye of Fate.

just got back from beach holidays, and my AshworthX is about 1 foot high - and starting to flower! probably a response to my harsh close planting. My Bonjour at the allotment is powering along, and producing multiple tillers.

I continue to be plagued by poor germination. I've sown all three blocks of my flour corn mix now but there are plenty of gaps to fill. I'll plant 3 or 4 seeds per hole and hope for at least one. The sweetcorn patch (Astronomy Domine plus others) is also suffering a bit from patchy germination. I don't mind so much there because the replacements will spread things a little.

Raymundo, dig around, is something eating them? Are they rotting? If you start 10 in a papertowel, how many do you get?
Last year I had some critter eating corn seeds. So, I started some in a flat and transplanted to the spotty area. In one are the patch was so spotty that I replanted it 3x, till giving up and transplanting.

Holly, I started replacements on paper towel but germination wasn't terrific; okay, but certainly not 100%. I guess for the ones sown direct it's a form of selection. Anyway, the plants that have grown all look good. Most are tillering. Not knowing much about corn, I don't know whether tillers are good or bad. I'm content to let them go but if other, more experienced growers think I should remove the tillers, I will.

I did a little Googling and it seems quite okay to leave them. If a tiller doesn't produce an ear the sugars its leaves make are used elsewhere in the plant so under those circumstances a tiller is a good thing.

Tillering is wonderful. Removing tillers was a plot hatched by father's to keep little girls busy during the summer and out of trouble. Perhaps little boys too, but then they NEVER get in trouble, do they?
I spent my summer vacations removing tillers.....

My Ashworth X se+ are producing lots of pollen, but only one plant out of 100 or so has silk. Is this normal, or a reaction to my overly close planting? Should I try and store some pollen for when the others start to silk? T

If there are tillers, they will produce pollen a little later on.

I put in a block of all different se+ varieties, just to see what I'd get. The first three produced tassles before the others, but, two days later, all the others had tassles. They just arrived really quickly. Some of the varieties were a good 2 weeks longer grow time than the others, . I'm wondering if the longer season ones were tricked somehow into producing tassles quickly.? Could this happen.?
