Thought I'd post about my corn here. Richard and Templeton please feel free to add anything here too about what you might be up to.
I have two corn patches this year which is two more than I usually have, so I'm a corn beginner.
In one patch I have a mix of corns I'm using to create a white (initially) flour corn that is adapted to my growing conditions. In it I have the remnants of two cultivars I tried to grow out a few years back for someone. It was an unmitigated disaster with only a few cobs harvested from each from at least 100 plants of each sown. Enough of that. I'm still embarrassed! These two are Hickory King and Posole Santo Domingo. Cortona sent me some of his flour corn so I picked out some white kernels and added those. They were the first up and seem quite vigorous. To this I've added a row of non-white corn, some flour, some dent I think. These I will detassle and collect separately. These will be planted together some time and allowed to cross. Any white kernels will go in with the other white corn. The other may form the basis of a coloured flour corn. We'll see.
The other patch is sweet corn. This one is quite small this year as I don't have enough prepared area to do a big patch. In it I have planted two rows of Astronomy Domine (Lofthouse version) plus a row of se+ corn. This is repeated three times with three different se+ corns (Ambrosia, Bon Jour and Sugar Pearl). I've also added the occasional Golden Bantam at the end of a row, just to vary things a little more. I also have some of Joseph's cherry corn via steev but that will have to wait until next year.
Sadly, I can really only do two patches of corn and be comfortable about isolation.
My growing experiments with corn wouldn't be possible without the generosity of people on this forum and elsewhere. Thank you to the person who trusted me with the original white flour corns and once again, my sincere apologies for making such a hash of it! Thank you to both Holly and Jo whose ingenuity has resulted in my having quite a range to choose from. Thank you to both Steev and Joseph for supplying some great corn and thank you Cortona, who, like me, is trying to create a flour corn that works well for him.
Sheesh, reads like a book! I don't mean to be so formal but you get the idea.
