The varieties he is working with are marginal for flavor. That is the only thing wrong with Harry Klee's work. I sent him about 25 varieties a few months ago that includes some seriously better flavored tomatoes.

Speaking of tomatoes, I must have potted up a dozen of Dar's seriously flavored tomatoes yesterday.
And just to make Leo blanch, I planted a tomato by the back door. I was trolling the nursery, looking for Evergreen Huckleberries, when a Sungold dived onto my wagon. ($1.99 for a 4 inch pot) I tell you they are making a killing. People were in buying them hand over fist. I found one that was a triple and divided them at the back door. I don't like Sungolds, but I could bear to risk any of Dar's or Cortona's or Lieven's Tomatoes.

DarJones Yep, in the interview he characterised heirloom or non-commercial tomatoes as hard to grow and finicky. Seems he doesn't read the tomato growers forums T

By no means a definitive list, here are a few that are very good.
Sweet flavor: Black Krim Cherry Sungold
More or less balanced, some sweetness with flavor: 1884 Anna Russian Bear Creek Brandywine (Sudduth strain) Cherokee Purple Crnkovic Yugoslavian Daniels Eva Purple Ball (interesting because it carries a high productivity trait, flavor IMO is mediocre) Green Giant J.D.'s Special C-Tex KBX Kosovo Lucky Cross Lynnwood Nepal Neves Azorean Red Polish Red Mortgage Lifter Rose de Berne Strawberry Margarita Stump of the World Yoders German Yellow
Intense flavor: Costoluto Genovese Druzba Perth Pride Picardy Piennolo del Vesuvio
Tart flavor: Jaune Flamme Green Zebra

Dar, you're one of the few who describes Green Zebra as tart. I have always found it tart as well. When I read descriptions in catalogues or on web sites about its sweet flavour I always wonder whether there is a strain out there different to what I've grown. Either that or they've never tasted it and are just making it up!

Sweet flavoured here with a delectable hint of spice. It is almost impossible to find a universally good tasting tomato. So many tomatoes are superb in some region and not in others. Tomatoes that are really flavourful here in the UK, with a wonderful acidity to sweetness balance, can taste sweet/bland, even mealy elsewhere. Some that are good in regions with warmer, sunnier summers are just not so pleasant here. Black Icicle for example, was outstanding here grown in the greenhouse, but had bad press elsewhere.

Yes i agree galina, different soils ,different locations, i'm at present trying to eat our way through a mountain of tunnelhouse grown Jaune Flamme and would put them in 'More or less balanced, some sweetness with flavour' list, ive been giving a few to friends who have been growing these modern bullet proof types which has just blown these socks as to much much flavour a real tomato can have.
