Somehow I've gotten Bing as my search engine, which is OK, but under Homegrown Goodness it lists eight of us, which I find disquieting. Granted, if we wanted total privacy, we'd not participate in the forum; it's just a shock to see my handle online just like that. Oh, well; hiding in plain sight.

Your Bing must be different from mine. I got a couple of disreputable sites as well as this one from the same Bing Search, but no mention of 8 members.

I've never seen that before, listing individual posters to the site. When clicking on an individual, rather than the site, it goes to the persons bio. While this is certainly not confidential information, I find it troubling.

Hmmmm, I went 5 pages into Bing using homegrown goodness forum and didn't see anything like that.

"homegrown goodness forum" gives me the site I expect, but my habit has been to just enter "homegrown goodness"; that's what has changed.

Bing just showed up one day here, too. Not sure where it came from.

If you're on Windows 7, Microsoft recently pushed out IE 10 as a critical update. Unless you have automatic updates disabled it would have installed without asking permission, and one quirk of the install is that it changes your default search engine to Bing. You can change it back to Google or whatever you prefer; it's just Microsoft's way of trying to increase the popularity of THEIR engine.

Thanks, that explains where it came from, but I still wonder why it's doing this personalize thing. BTW, you're one of the entries.

One of Bing's features is that it dredges your social networks for connections and then provides search results that are common between you. So, for example, if you are connected to the people that you see listed through Facebook, that is probably why they show up on your screen.
I don't get any forum users listed, but I don't have any social networking accounts.

Hmmm. I wonder if Bing is picking up the last 24 hours' active user list at the bottom of the index page and reading it as a list of subject tags. Is it the same as the first 8 in that list?

I don't get any forum users listed, but I don't have any social networking accounts. Neither do I. I'm not a face, a twit, a pin, a +1, nor any other major social media follower. Doesn't seem that long ago we were taught to NEVER post personal info publicly online, and doing so still makes me uneasy. I dunno, maybe I'm getting old. Maybe I'm just weird. My wife doesn't share that idiosyncrasy. My picture may be on Facebook... on her page. I do use the same handle on a lot of sites, though, and have used it for a long time. Maybe it picked up on that? MB

Seems like a reasonable guess. Bing is trying to distinguish itself as the tool for searching and finding people, rather than topics, so odds are pretty good that they are trying to tie forum identities together as well.

It's several days now and there has been no change in the people listed, nor their order. I can only assume it's in order of beauty, except they seem to have ottawa in the wrong place.

Could be a bias anti-Canadian; automatic one-point minus, I suppose.

I get the same 8 in the same order. Doesn't seem to make any form of sense; if it were post volume, recent or total, the names would be different. If it were recent logins, whoever was looking would always be first on the list. And I know there are others here who use the same handles elsewhere. Maybe Microsoft hired Douglas Adams. Bistromathics, anyone?
