Just stick it in a pot in spring, or in a warm place. I have never had any trouble getting them to germinate but they need to be warm.

I've heard that licorice is quite invasive, spreading via stolons. Has this been your experience Rowan?

With our very dry summer they didn't do that well so didn't spread even with daily watering (they are on pure sand so I had to water every day). They are two years old and I will dig for roots next Autumn so maybe that will cause them to sucker.

So they need a temp more like germinating Asparagus seed, needs to be over 18deg,so are they frost tender? and do they need a lot of warmth once they are growing

The tops die down after frost and they go dormant. I find that they grow fine here all year until the they go dormant and have not really noticed any changes due to temperatures, they don't seem to need a lot of warmth. It is hard for me to say since my plants are still young and we have had a couple of unusual years that have knocked a lot of our plants.
