We've started planting our corn today. We are putting rows in the opposite direction this year. Also allowing three baby pigs to do our tilling & fertilizing. Down so far are White, purple/white, and purple/yellow wax 2 types of glutinous waxy Weeks "Giant Edible Field Corn"

These seeds come from a small company that is about 60 miles or so from where I live. They have mostly ordinary varieties, but several have a "giant" version. I'm also growing their "giant" carrots. They haven't even sprouted yet, but we shall see what we shall see. Their website is here: www.weeksseeds.com/index.htmlIf they have anything that excites you, let me know.

There's a cane thicket at the south end of Mr. Prince's garden plot, and I'd originally planned on building tepees from them to grow his butterpeas on. Then I got to thinking about just how many canes that would require. Then I stopped by the co-op and found Trucker's Favorite corn, which he used to interplant them with, being sold for $1.50 a pound. SOOOO..... yesterday I planted 300 feet of row of Trucker's Favorite interplanted with butterpeas. Mom-in-law says Trucker's makes the best creamed corn anyway, but whether we eat it or not it's worth $1.50 just for the bean poles. And I've got plenty left over.
Joseph's Paradise went in the ground today up on my brother-in-law's land. We put in roughly 1600 feet of row and didn't use up half the seed I'd saved. Guess I didn't realize how much I had.

I'll be sure to save you some seed if all goes well Cortona! The seeds themselves were huge. I had 3 packets and I pulled out the best and will "toss plant" the little ones. We shall see what we shall see, huh?
I'll be planting some Trucker's Favorite as well but we were told it's a field corn? I'm not surprised to hear it's good creamed. How tall are you expecting it to grow?

Trucker's is a dent field corn. I'm told that it can reach 8-9 feet here. Never grown it before myself, so I can't speak from experience yet. I'm not planning to give it any extra nitrogen as I want to make sure the butterpeas produce as much as possible, so it may not go as high as it would with fertilizer. We'll see what happens.

Interesting that the white kernels are the result of red pollinating white.

Pericarp is maternal only tissue, so pericarp color can be inherited without being visible in the first generation. If a corn with red pericarp pollinates a white kerneled corn, then the red pericarp will not show up until later generations.

Thanks Joseph. I keep forgetting that a corn kernel is a fruit and only the embryo inside carries whatever genes were carried by the pollen.

All of our corn is starting to pop up (LOLOL Get it? PoP UP?) ahem... even the Shandong Black. HURRAY! Also, after looking at the markers I finally managed to convince Mike and the boys were necessary to put in, I discovered that low and behold, the Trucker's Favorite is also planted! HA! I thought we had to plant it after the piggies were moved again. How wrong was I! Anyhow... up and growing. So far so good.

Planted the first half of the flint corn a few days ago. I'm trying a corn crossing set-up so I've planted a selection of the brown colors from Bronze Beauty. In about a week or so I will plant all the alternate rows with yellow kernels of my mixed flint. The Bronze Beauty was about a week behind the mixed flint in pollination last year so I'm hoping they will overlap if I do this offset, especially as I intend on detasseling the yellow rows.
I've had crows in there stealing corn already, I'm probably going to have to get one and hang him up as a warning.
