Now onion do not like crowing and usually, onions a year, or more, old do not act like onions sold in bunches or bags when they grow.
I had a half-dozen, or so, red onions that volunteered in the garden this spring. I did not roto-till last fall so how they got where they came up is a mystery.
Well these onions did well, very well.
Onions I planted and weeded in the "onion" bed did lousy but these volunteer reds were crowded. The best= were nice, baseball sized onions but they were CLOSELY surrounded by planted carrots, planted marigold and zinnias and volunteer cleome.
To make a long story short, these were the best producing onions I have had in years and they were all spring volunteers that were moved to a new location as a last minute "what do I do with these?" type thing.
Why did they do so well?
