I have an even bigger crop of winter squash than in 2012, plus lots of onions and I think sweet potatoes. I am not sure what to do with all the squash. Can they be left outside until freezes, getting rained on and so on, after harvest? I need ideas.

My landlord said farmers used to pile the squash up on the ground and cover them with the vines. The vines would get the frost. I was thinking of doing this for a while but with a tarp on top for added frost protection. Earliest fall ever here I think and I have huge squash that I don't want to box.

I was thinking of doing this for a while but with a tarp on top for added frost protection. That was my strategy this year... My truck is still broke down, so couldn't carry squash out of the field fast enough, so about 8 hours prior to frost I picked the squash, stacked them into piles, and covered them with vines. Squash picked and piled up a few hours before frost was expected. A few minutes later after the pile was covered with squash vines. Around here, pumpkin farmers leave their wares in the field until very late in the season. Rain/sun doesn't seem to harm them. I normally pick my squash just before the fall frosts arrive and store them on shelves in the barn until really cold weather arrives, then move them to the garage until intense cold arrives then move then into the spare bedroom.
