Down, Jacob's Cattle and Vermont Cranberry Beans are large, very tasty and very colourful baking beans. I have neglected to grow them in recent years, but I used to grow enough that we could have baked beans at least twice a month using them. I like to use 2 parts Cranberry beans and one part black turtle beans in a pot of baked beans with molasses. A great Winter comfort dish that one!

Blue.. you seem to know alot about beans.
I have a variety i'm planning on trialing next season called Michigan Improved Cranberry, have you ever tried that one?
And does anyone know anything about the Phaseolus luntus types of beans? I have several Hopi varieties that i am going to trial next season too. It wouldn't hurt to find anyone who has already grown some of these.
Unfortunately i haven't found any Jacobs cattle yet.. I did look for them but so far no luck. After reading your description of em Blue, i think i'll try a little harder to find some before next season. They sound like they'd be a nice addition to the other 100 or so varieties i'll be trialing.
What's everyone elses favorite types, varieties wise? I'd like to see if i've selected any varieties that are or would become favorites.

I've never grown Jacobs cattle or Vermont cranberry but I hear them mentioned a lot by customers at the farmers market looking for something different. However, I have grown that black turtle bean and it's a terrific cultivar, great taste, good production, cheap seed, right up my alley and I highly reccomend it. Though I can't remember I do believe that the SSE catalouge actually listed Jacobs cattle it doesn't appear to be on the online listing however there were these two beans. Jacobs Cattle Gasless-from a cross of Jacobs cattle and Black turtle: www.seedsavers.org/prodinfo.asp?number=1174(OG)And Jacobs Cattle golden-Same as Jacobs cattle, different color: www.seedsavers.org/prodinfo.asp?number=1439Hope this helps a bit. -Alan

Thanks Alan..
The links were a great idea.. but unfortunately they didn't work. Kept giving me a runtime script error or something like that. Saved me alot of time though... just had to backspace in the address to get to the homepage of SSE.
I see they also have the Vermont cranberry. Don't know what i'd do with a thousand seeds though. All i really need is about 50 of em for a small trial. I may order the whole thousand though and try and trade some away. The Jacobs cattle are definately affordable enough. only there with me being such a tightwad i think i'll just order the 250 seed and pound amounts of those 2 and try an trade any extras. It just makes more sense to me to pay less than double the 50 seed amount and get 5 times as many seeds. I'll figure out what to do with the leftovers.
Anyways, i'll probably be placing an order here on the first of next month. If anyone would be interested in the extras let me know. I know it's still way too early to be thinking of planting beans, but i found from last year it's best to order early just in case they run out.
Appreciate all the help....
Dave..
PS.. blue you're not full of beans.. are you? :-)
