I'm seeing this in descriptions of corn and can't figure out what exactly it is. Bodacious and Argent are being replaced with this and are now Bodacious RM and Argent RM by some seed companies. When I try to search it down to see exactly what it is I find mostly vague stuff that seems to indicate it has to do with maturity. The seed companies however describe it as an improved disease resistance package. Any one got the real scoop on this?

You are looking for R/M. Go to www.crookham.com and read about it on the website of the company that produces the hybrids. Short answer is that Rust, Maize Dwarf Mosaic, and Stewarts Wilt tolerance have been incorporated into the breeding lines. I have a gem line from ARS-Grin that will be part of next year's grow outs. I would like to add disease tolerance to the enhanced protein and oil lines I am currently growing.

Thanks, DarJones I think I might want to incorporate that into my sweet corn next year. I have never gotten anything from GRIN, need to check into how to do that. I have browsed and figured out how to search it, to some degree. I'm so new at this and figuring it out as I go along. This year has taught me lot and a lot of it is what not to do. What is a gem line?

So what is the ARS attitude towards Civilian/Hobbyists these days? I understood they had shut that door and were only interested in dealing with "real" breeding institutions.

It helps that I am a somewhat real breeding institution. Or at least that I have a nice website name. www.selectedplants.com/

Some units are more challenging than others. Many will send you stuff without question. Others will send you "piss off" letters or other hoops to jump through to prove that you're serious. If you persist and will make an honest attempt to collect and provide information, they'll usually give in.

It helps to request weird stuff that has obviously value only for breeding purposes
