I was sorting some cowpeas for cooking the other day and noticed two things. First, there was quite a bit of variation in color and shape. Second, the package said they were a product of Myanmar. I thought I'd put up a note here in case any of you are interested in a few seeds. No promises they'll be disease-free since I just buy them in 1-kilo bags for eating, but a quick test showed 96% germination after two days.

They look more or less like the kind that come from India so I'm probably good (but if, as you go through the bag you find any mottled or speckled ones, let me know, I'm sort of short on those for this type)
BTW if you have never planted these before you may be in for a surprise. Based on an errant one that managed to germinate in one of my waste piles, some, possibly all of the plants of this type of cowpea have pods that point straight up, like candles.

Your wish is my command! Well, not really, but it was kind of fun to spend a few minutes looking through a pile of beans trying to find speckled ones. PM me if you're interested, and I'll send them off to you. You're welcome to the lima bean(??) as well. If I have the space next summer, I'll throw a few in the dirt and see what they look like. I like the idea of pods that point straight up.

The ones with pods that stick straight up are supposed to be easier to pick. However, they are more visible to varmints in my garden and were the first eaten! I have much better luck with the ones that hide under leaves.
