no
I dont think Id gain that much
the cloth would have to be high enough to allow decent airflow otherwise it can almost be like adding a tent and could stagnate the air on hot days
you dont want that strong of light block either
I went out and made some crosses today and probably will up to saturday

I was wondering the same thing-some kind of shade setup. We're 87 and humid now and my tomato blossoms are really coming on.
My garden at Mom's in the country gets afternoon shade and some tomatoes like Brandywine-Sudduths sets a nice crop where my Brandywine in town may drop blossoms through two or three heatwaves.
NUTS!!!

So, I need an air-conditioned greenhouse?.. (j/k)
Well, high's in the upper 80's, lows in the upper 60's and 3 days of rain per week just might not cut it, is what you're telling me, kc. It looks like the last few days of July is when the temps start reversing, so maybe by the middle or end of august the pollen might start flowing on its own. Do you have luck with that strategy, waiting until it cools off a bit at the end of summer? I still get one more round of fruits at that time (on the plants that haven't died of disease.)
Good point about location, stratcat. I have some plants that are under shade in the afternoon and some get sun 'til sundown. I'll be sure to note the difference.

Came home from Austin today, went out and checked my tomatoes ... found two positive crosses of Green Giant x Yellow Submarine about the size of half dollars now. Frickin' vines are so crazy that I can't find all my tagged blossoms yet. Must've rained a lot while I was gone. Will report on more confirmed crosses as I uncover them.

Forecast (here) looks somewhat promising in a couple of days. The highs will be in the upper 80's, lows in the upper 60's. The only downside is that there is a good chance of rain during the next week, which drives up humidity. I'm hopeful that there might be a good opportunity for some more crossing during a couple of dry days/mild temps coming up! Got my electric toothbrush ready...

I have not been able to make one cross since last week, but for some cucurbits. Of course, it is raining EVERY DAY and when it is not, humidity is in the high 90's. Probably even more around the maters and taters, as the raised beds are surrounded by water puddles and I could almost use a canoe in my walkways...

On the seemingly perfect day (temps mild, no wind,) I tried at intervals between 11 and 2 to collect some pollen, but it wouldn't budge. Since then it has been raining. guess I'd better turn my attention to cloning...

I had bad pollination in our Belgian greenhouse for the first time thisyear: no bumble bees as usual, even though I opened doors & windows & attract all types of insects with beneficial flowers etc. Colony collapse? Fortunately, I got a miniature bee nest from friends a couple of weeks ago; just a few scores of pretty, but busy bees. Now I enjoy the continuous buzz of working bees, visiting every new tomato flower & I hope each of the latter will grow into a mater!
