Picked up a copy Saturday because there was an article on heritage hogs. What a lame mag. Regurgitated info from other places, 'contributors' who seem to maybe hang out on internet forums and then write 'tips' for things that have been all been said before. Some of it outright plagarism. Dumbing down of America indeed. I also thumbed through Horticulture, Fine Gardening and Organice Gardening. Pitiful.

I wondered where hobby horses came from, now I know.
Fully equipped and heading out into society now.

My FIL still has OG mags from the 70's. It was a great publication back then.

Karen, are you referring to me?
I wrote a short article in the current issue of Hobby Farms, and it was a list of tips for household "useless" items. I didn't plagiarize anything. Some of the tips were things that I discovered myself (e.g. the venetian blinds as garden markers) or that I had been told about; a few of them came from information in books (e.g. the coffee grounds), but nothing to constitute plagiarism. In fact, I tried to be as original as possible, and omitted some hackneyed tips that everyone has heard. The editor gave me a word limit, so I had to be rather "shallow" and concise in that particular piece.
With regard to OG, though, I agree that it is dumbing down. By the year, it seems. Especially since Dan Sullivan left the OG editor's chair.

The July/August issue. Same issue as the one with the hog article.

For folks who are new to gardening, look for the old mags. Mother Earth News used to be good, Organic Gardening was good. I had a nearly complete set of MEN, then I donated them and wished I hadn't. Then a while back I picked up a box full at an auction for $1. There were the really old issues, ones that I hadn't had the first time around. Some of those mags went to live with Alan. My grandfather got Organic Gardening for years and kept all of them. Nobody wanted them when he died, I got them but ended up giving them away long ago. Wish now I had kept them. If you ever find the 'pre-glossy pictures' mags at an auction or yardsale, do yourself a favor and buy them. I also note that many mags are running articles that have already been published in other mags. That is just wrong. I hate buying for an article that I think will give me new info, only to find out that I have read the exact same article already.

I remember those old organic gardening magazines.. i used to read em like other kids would read comic books.. over and over again. Used to really love the Ruth Stout articles. My dad had saved every issue he'd ever gotten years and years before i was born over 50 years ago.. and all of em afterwards too. They were a cherished possesion of mine after he died.. but, apparently my mother just thought they were useless and threw em all away. Come to think of it that's what she did with all my old comics up in the attic too! Damn her. Those would have been collectibles now.

Too bad your Mom tossed the comics, you could have been rich selling on ebay. Economy keeps getting worse and maybe you could have sold the old OG's too.

Some of the tips were things that I discovered myself (e.g. the venetian blinds as garden markers). I'm sure that hint was published in both OG and MEN long before you were even born. lol I do grab old mags and books wherever I can find them. Once I got a whole bag of old Farmer's Almanacs from the 1960's for free. Even they regurgitate info. lol

Come on guys, be fair ... after all they just started using venetian blinds up in the Ozarks. Up until a few years ago, they just used old bedsheets.

Well, pv, I hate to admit this, but I just got done taping aluminum foil to the windows. I hate curtains, so I don't have any on our windows. We don't have close neighbors, so I can get away with it. But, it is hotter than hell this week, so I go with the foil. It really helps. Easily folded and stored away for next year.

An added benefit of the foil is it blocks the mind control rays used by our government to brain wash us all, as well as the alien probe waves. It might even help control access of chemtrails to your house.
