I know there has been some discussion about early sweet corn and sweet corn with cold soil tolerance, etc. But what about these traits in a sweet corn that seed can be purchased in volume? I am looking for an early sweet corn...very early, prefer white but yellow ok and something I can get 5 pounds of seed for. Ohhh, must be open pollinated too (prefer heirloom). I am interested in Yukon Supreme but can't find over packet size amounts available. Any ideas guys (and gals)?
Thanks, Blueflint

I would definitely go with pickanniny, a very early small white corn at milk stage, blue later. Old litterature only has praised for it, liking it to Golden Bantam in taste. I am growing some this year, and plan to make much more seed next year. I grow it for Heritage Harvest Seed, but I had problems with the weather, and it tasselled a 1-2 feet, but it is making small cobs. By the time the rain stopped, it was too late and I had no more room in the field for my main planting.
I am also growing ORCHARD BABY another small corn, very early too, even more so than Alan's early mix. Surely the first I will eat...
I am testing a dwarf white sweet corn, WHITE MIDGET, of which I have 2 accessions, I planted the most shrunken kernelled accession. I had 100 seeds and got only 56% germination, but I will report on it to you if you wish so. I also have others to try next year, and I intend to produce enough seeds to share a bit.
I have high hopes for WM, because of the extreme shrunkenness of the kernels for an SU.

I ordered Orchard Baby this year too. Corn didn't grow very well in the packet in the fridge. I think next year I might try to plant the seeds in the ground and see what happens. I think I have more seeds in the fridge right now than food. I am so ashamed of not planting all the seed I ordered this year. I admire the determination of those who did manage to get things planted this year, I know that the weather everywhere has been terrible.

Thanks for the input. I guess what I am looking for is something like Yukon Supreme or maybe a golden bantam that is much shorter in days to picking but something I can get a couple pounds of seed for. Many of the short season types I am finding only packet size available. Again, whatever I grow must be open pollinated. Any more input would be appreciated.

Blueflint, I just got many selections of sweet corn from Gatersleben in Germany. I have to do the research on them, as the info are not clear on dtm. I could send you some of my seeds from Gatersleben and GRIN-USA, but it would be in small numbers, however enough to test. It is quite possible your search will be over in 2 years, as we are testing a lot and will end up with some quantities of seeds.
Meanwhile, I will keep you posted on White Midget. A couple of the german accessions show promisses with very shrunken kernels.
