I have planted many beans this year, I might report on some others later, mainly climbing one, but my 3 main bush are RED SWAN, ROCDOR, and FIN DE BAGNOL.
The FDB are very productive, very long and slim beans. I have found them good, friends love them, they have a look that is quite a seller, but they are tasty when big, they are soooo slim one only eats skin up to 5 inches long or so. Between 7 and 9 inches long seems the ideal lenght, after that some, not all, develop a tiny string.
The yellow ROCDOR is a fantastic yellow bean, very long and slim too, very pleasing to the eye and stringless.
But the RED SWAN, a pretty new introduction from SSE, a cross of a pinto bean and another one I can't remember, is a real winner. Its old dusty rose color is beautiful, and the taste is very delicate for a green bean ( once cooked), superior to any I have had up to now, although I have to say I am no green bean aficionado.
You can taste the difference in the raw stage. It is crunchy, juicy, sweeter than usual, and the bean has some of the flatness of the romanos, but stays perfect even past the stage where many would become dry. It is a very heavy, healthy full bean that stays amazingly plump and juicy even with the seeds formed inside, quite a nice surprise, and totally stringless too.
I have yet to find another bean that feels so heavy for its size in my hand.
I strongly recommend her to commercial growers, and the ROCDOR too.
And Alan, you will be pleased to know ONE of my bush greasy beans is doing very well, I tasted one only to find it has a very delicate and excellent taste, I am sure this one is a winner.
Do they become stringy when big?
