I don't think it is in the seeds, my friend. Maybe somebody knows why it happens, all I can tell you is some varieties are more prone to it, and it happens more some years. I think, for example, that the sometimes common ''little dick'' growing is stress related. I saw that often in roma tomatoes ( More so than others). Some years it can even be very common. I more than once had such '' little dick'' years, they were all over the place, especially in my canning maters patch. As for the red calabash, it looks like some form of vegetable cancer, uncontrolled growth of freakish cells. I haven't seen any this year in my garden, so I suppose it is not water stress related

Michel: I think sometimes it might be in the seed. This was last year. Supposed to be Early Glee, but obviously wasn't. Every tomato on the plant was more or less like these. Freaked me enough that I dodn't save seed from any of them.

I had my 6 year old nephew here, taking care of him because he has chicken pox. Showed him those pics, then thought I probably shouldn't have, he might go telling folks aunt Karen had pics of 'winksters'. That would be hard to explain to Child Protective Services. He thought that it looked like the tomatoes had 'pooped'.
