Alan, or anyone else close to my area, I have tons of apples falling everyday. I think these would be good to try making vinegar for weed killing. I did use plain old store bought vinegar for spraying, and it did work ok on dandelions and bindweed, but not on grasses. I am hoping that a stronger concentration will work better for those tough grasses. The weeds have really gotten me down this year. I hope to get a better handle on it earlier next year. But then, we always think next year will be better, don't we? Anyway, if anyone wants apples, come and get them.

Karen, Regular vinegar isn't strong enough for what you are attempting to do. Commercial grade vinegars that are sold as herbicides are about 5 times stronger than the stuff that is sold for table use.
Actually, I'll check today and see exactly what the concentration is. I think we have some on the shelf at the store. I'll let you know tonight.

Glad to see you back as a member. The stuff we can buy here is generally for pickling, and is 5%. I have never made cider myself, but I have been reading up on it. I have plenty of apples to experiment with, so I will give it a go. I went through I don't know how many gallons of vinegar, and was happy with the results up to a point. It actually seems like Roundup would probably be cheaper. We all want to do the right thing for the environment, but I wonder what I may be doing to soil organisms with the vinegar. Seems there is always that pesky law of unintended consequences.

The herbicide vinegar sold in garden centres around here for 15$ a LITER is simply 7.15%. So, 0.15% just to convince people it is different. Ah! The cost of complex chemical engineering

Michel, EcoSense by Scott's as well as EcoClear from B.C. are both 20% acetic acid.
Karen, I'm sure there must be a source for commercial grade vinegar based herbicide in the U.S.? Or mebbe not??

Definetly interested Karen, just got to get back over your way sometime soon! I still need to bring you your chicken cage back as well and I owe you beans. Man, I sound like a bum don't I. Anyhow, I may be over your way next week! Will definetly be in town in September with regular deliveries to the co-op and the speaking engagement on the 19'th.
