We couldn't get anyone to bale the last year we took hay off the farm. So we cut it ourselves and brought it in loose with pitchforks. The horses just LOVED the loose hay. But it's a lot of work of course and it also takes up a lot of storage space like that.
That's why folks had lots of children and lived near all their relatives back then. I know. Lots of folks still do live near family. Probably why we never got as much done around the farm as we should have. We didn't have a house full of children, nor any relatives to help us.

Looks like a good time Karen! Do you guys keep up with local antique equipment shows? If so let me know when the next one is, I would love to take dad to one of those. We watch a lot of "classic tractors" on RFDTV.

I have an eccentric great-uncle who told us about this show, he lives in Indianapolis, but goes all over to oddball kind of stuff. He grew up out on 'Owl Hollow Road' and I don't know how he ever made it in the city. He is into the old hit&miss engines, so is our neighbor Fred. They go to some shows, I can ask him where and when there might be some upcoming ones. I am afraid the Birdseye party was kind of sad, but they did have the nice display of old farm stuff and a nice old car showing. Nothing else to speak of. We were going to be in the area to pick up some rabbits anyway. Birdseye is one of those old towns that kind of looks like the town in 'Fried Green Tomatoes', once a prosperous railroad town, now seems to have lost all hope. Beautiful old buildings along the main street, but empty and for sale. Wish I had lots of cash, I would love to take on a restoration project. Lots of tourist drive through there, I don't know why locals don't fix it up and cash in. Sorry I'm rambling...

Alan, I don't know if it would be too far away for you to travel or not but there is an antique tractor show going on in my area this week. It is the White River Valley Antique Show in Elnora, IN. It is on Sept., 5, 6 and 7th. It is pretty awesome. They have antique trucks, steam engines, tractors, horse demonstration, hay press, machine shop, sawmill and threshing. And my favorite part a huge flea market. To find out more go to www.wrvaa.org. It is sponsored by the White River Valley Antique Association. I was told a convoy of eighty tractors went through Montgomery (my hometown) today to go to Elnora. I missed them.

Barb, thanks for that info-where is Elnora? I can't place it off the top of my head. We just may head that way Saturday, looks like fun. Alan, if you see this in time, and you would want to go but don't want to drive that far, you could come here and we can ride together.

Karen-I remember that you mentioned you go to Dinky's Auction Barn-you are not that far from Elnora. You stay on the road that Dinky's is on( I am not sure of the county road numbers. We refer to it as Odon-Canelburg road. ) This road will take you all the way into Odon. Once you are in Odon, you will need to take a left. This is Highway 58. I take this road until North Daviess High School (it is on the right). Take the first road to the right after the high school. Stay on this road until you can not go forward anymore. Take a left onto Highway 57 West. Be careful there because it is on a slight hill and curve. You will see the Graham Cheese factory on the left. Take 57 over the railroad tracks and just a short distance will be the Daviess County fairgrounds and that is where it is being held (it is on the left) If you don't want to go through the country past Dinky's you could take Highway 231 North to Highway 58 into Odon and stay on 58 until you get to the North Daviess High School turn. If you miss the North Daviess High School turn, there is signs telling you where to turn to go into Elnora. I just always go up through the country to get there. Well actually it is all pretty rural but I always consider it country when I am on county roads. Wow, that was long directions, but I hope they give you some idea where you are going.
