I was wondering if any of the serious gardeners here were planning on writing any comparisons on a major scale? Seems like there is a lot of info scattered here on varieties, might be nice to see it all put together.

I thought we were ALL serious gardeners on this site? Well, we might not be serious about everything ALL of the time, but we are certainly Serious about our Gardens.

I am planning to take that route. My friend has designed a planting chart for her CSA, I want to build on it, modify it so sisease resistance, yield, quality ( flavor), weather will be noted.
I was palnning on doing it this year, but I gort overwhelmed by the work, having 2 designated helpers that ended up to be only that, designated, instead of real. And the incredible weather made it teribly hard to cope with everything. At the very least, I posted my list of melons and posted pictures of the good ones. Pictures of melons at the foetal stage are not of real interest. I did not report in a fashion that satisfies me, but it was far from a satisfying year anyway. Next year I'll also go bolder on moschatas, as I noted earlier, and on peas, (beans too), if we don't end up with 5 feet of snow at the usual planting time like we did this year. Fall brings in a crop but I want to save seeds, and I will be lucky if I can this year. One thing sure, the ROI DES CONSERVES, a climbing french petit pois, is a true gourmet very small pea.
My report on corn is simple this year:
Only the stuff pre-planted in growth cells made it, to be raided by the racoons. The more than one acre planted gave me about 12 ears, no pollination on most of the plants that could sprout.
Next year I'll report on the turnip rooted chervil trial patch, as this vegetable seems to be the next wave, being researched and promoted by France's government as a great value added crop. For those interested, now is the planting time for harvest in July, follow the garlic planting and harvest pattern and you will be OK. The crop needs 2 months of cold storage to transform its non-edible chemical coumpounds into a desirable vegetable, sold at a very high price in Europe.

Okay, here goes the serious part. I did start a Journal this year but when we got serious about selling the farm, I didn't plant even half what I normally do. And what I did plant was for the most part, basic generic hardware store seedstock. Apart from 6 of Alan's mini pumpkin and assorted acorn squash mixtures.
Needless to say, I didn't get past the early entries, although I do know where the journal is, and maybe I'll go do that now while I keep one eye on the Elections Canada Debate, another on the American v-P Debate and a Third on Richard Gere.
You're so right in chiding me because even a line or two about the few items I grew might come in handy in future.

You're so right in chiding me because even a line or two about the few items I grew might come in handy in future. Blue, frenchie here, I have no clue about the meaning of that sentence. Am I the one doing the ''chiding''? ? I hope not ( or should I hope I did?), if so I don't know what I am doing! I was talking to people in general, not exactly to you.... HELP!

Chide....Isn't that some kind of aromatic tea that's very "in" right now?? Frenchie, ROFL, I just mean that I should not procrastinate about making those entries in my gardening journal any more...THank You both for reminding me. Michel, speaking of not being able to understand what people are saying, did you watch any of the Elections Canada Debate? ? OMG ...I turned it on and they were all yelling at each other..I have no idea whether they were speaking English, Inuit, Quebecois or Newfie ...And they expect we, the voters to go to the polls in less than 2 weeks?? What are we supposed to be voting about?? Do you know?? Send me an email and let me know will ya?? I went back to the American V-P debate on NBC and am thoroughly enjoying the smiling faces of Governor Palin and Senator 'O'Biden as she called him at one point during the evening..LOL Okay, so I still forgot to do the journal. I got sidetracked just a tad I know...Shouldn't discuss Politics or Religion with Friends so that's enough of politics for me for another 4 years

I PREFER THE AMERICAN DEBATES. Any debate with Harper in it, all political ideas set aside, is a magic cure for insomnia. This guy could put me asleep even if I WAS YOUNG AND NAKED IN BED WITH THE TEN MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMEN IN THE WORLD.
He is, in a way, an exceptional human being. Who else can be elected prime minister while being so....well, I don't even know how to put it, let's just say drab and boring. Is there one millionth of the tenth of an ounce of passion in the man? Can you imagine him having an orgasm? or even enjoying a meal... feeling extatic about anything, I really mean ANYTHING???

Honestly, this was a hint at CanadaMike-he seems to keep track of things pretty well. Me, I have good intentions at the start of the year and then, well, you know how good intentions can go. Anyway, I don't really do veggies, more into the ornamental side of things. When I sow seeds for my perennials, I have an index card system that I use. I list my source of seed, name obviously, date sown, date germinated and date transplanted. I have space for notes on first bloom, and where I planted it in the garden. Now, it can take two years for some plants just to germinate, so I can't say that I always follow through with all of the info, but I am going to make more of an effort in the future. Even if I don't end up liking a plant, I keep the card for future reference. I have become kind of ruthless with plants, if I don't just really like something, I rip it out. We are going to start planting daughters 3 acres with fruiting bushes and trees, and I really want to keep track of them.

I do a daily journal, so i can actually tell if I got anything done during the day. It's supposed to cover anything that might not get written down later, but half of the time I can't remember the details that count. I have a pocket memory (read notebook) that is always with me to capture that sort of thing in, but I am usually so into doing what ever it is that I am doing, that I don't take the time to note things. I do manage to pull enough of it together when I make up our seed lists, that there is a reasonable description of each variety, provided there was something that made the variety stick in my mind. This process often has me sitting at the computer, doing the thousand yard stare, trying to remember what the heck it was that I wanted to write down. And, believe it or not, this is an improvement on the old method - - - I don't ahve to write it down, it'll stick in my mind. NOT.
