Great to see you here, Rebsie. I've been following your wonderful blog for a while, had the intention of giving some comments, but I never got any further than this intention,.... ;D ;D ;D ;D I once did find a red pea in a catalogue somewhere (could have been the SSE yearbook), I'll have a re-search and make a better effort to get you informed I hope you continue this blog and the site, the information is so good, and there really is a lack of info on all of this breeding and conservation material, Frank

Thanks again!
Stratcat, it's good to see a picture of Sugar Magnolia. I too received the "wrong" seeds this year and by the time the right ones arrived I felt it was too risky to sow them so I've held them over for next year (and I'm glad I did, because the late summer weather was very bad and I lost a lot of my late pea crops).
I assume they will cook up green, as anthocyanin in pods tends to be very water-soluble, but they may keep some or most of their colour if steamed or stir-fried. Interesting what you say about the flavour. I grew some Spring Blush this year which I believe is derived from the same breeding project as Sugar Magnolia and the taste was sublime. It will be interesting to compare them next year.

Hi, Rebsie.
Originally Dr. Kapuler sent me Magnolia Blossom Snap Vine Pea. It had the purple flowers with green pods and tasted really good when plumped up.
Out of maybe a dozen Sugar Magnolia pea vines, I had one that had green pods. My peas grew in lots of heat in late summer so maybe that affected the taste of the purple ones.

ps: I play gtr, as well. ;D

I've often joked about what a funny combination it is to be a gardener and a musician at the same time. And now I come here and find you're ALL musicians! I love early Pink Floyd, so I'm going to find Alan's creations hard to resist. (Have you got any varieties called Psychedelic Breakfast yet, Alan? ) Meanwhile Patrick has posted a really good explanation of the European seed situation over on his blog, explaining why seed swapping is so important to us over here. www.patnsteph.net/weblog/?p=540

No psychedelic breakfast yet Rebsie but the thought did cross my mind now that we are raising easter egg and marans type chickens. I thought about marketing them as Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast eggs in the near future!
I find myself very inspired by all types of music but particularly psycedelic, delta blues, Bluegrass, and early American Rock (Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, not an Elvis fan though).
I myself have covered Terrapin and Astronomy Domine in the past, I haven't recorded in a couple of years but may make a go of some stuff next year at some point wherin I would like to try my hand at "octopus" and a few others.
Have you heard of Roky Erickson or the 13'th Floor Elevators? I think you would really enjoy them.
BTW, I really enjoy your music very much so, I will definetly be purchasing your album in the near future.

Alan, let me send you a copy of the album as a thank you for the Astronomy Domine seeds. I'm very pleased you like my stuff. Music is always the biggest thing in my life, however engrossed I get with the plants. I'll have to check out those bands, I'm not familiar with them. And as Patrick says, thanks for everything you do here.

Hi Rebsie,
Its nice to see the British contingent growing here.
Dr Kapuler appears to have got his Sugar Magnolia mixed up with his Magnolia Blossom this season. I received what I thought was Sugar Magnolia and was rather confused by the green pods until I got some replacement seeds and a letter from Dr Kapuler explaining the mix up. I didn't have time to grow any of the new seed this year but it will be going in next season.
Rebsie, did you get the second batch of seed (the true Sugar Magnolia seed) I sent through. if not I can send a few more for you to cross into Opal Creek.
I plan to make the same cross next season; being a Welshman I must have a red sugarsnap. I then want to cross it to a dwarf pea variety to develop a diminutive red sugarsnap. I figure I can name it after one of the shorter members of the welsh rugby team.
John, thanks for the pic, it's a nice preview of what I can expect next year.
Take care all,
Graham.

It's great to see you here too Graham. I'm immensely grateful to you for being so generous in sharing your Kapuler peas with me, which seem pretty much unavailable in the UK. Yes I did get the 'real' Sugar Magnolia, thank you, and look forward to trying it next year. Another thing I have to thank you for is the Red Miracle sweet corn you sent me, which is undoubtedly the best corn I've ever grown. I was just blown away by it. Never seen such beautiful colours (having only ever grown boring commercial sweetcorn before) and it tasted fantastic. It's good to know that you share my passion for red vegetables. Keep me posted about how you get on with the red sugarsnap.

Okey, I'll get a CD sent off to you. You'll have to let me know what you think of my cover of "Julia Dream" ... reworked in an ethereal psych-folk style with Irish uillean pipes! ;D
