I have a weakness for growing potatoes I can't find at the store. This year I've got Russian Banana Fingerling, All Blue, Cranberry Red and King Harry in the ground. The King Harry is a new one for me, but I grew the rest last year. I also grew Carola last year, but I don't have enough room for so many potatoes, so that's the one that got bumped this season. We absolutely love the All Blue, by the way, if you're ever looking for a tasty, odd colored potato. Here's where I buy my seed potatoes: www.woodprairie.com/catalog/index.htmlThe potatoes all come with Maine organic cert info attached, for those of you who grow organic, and they always tuck a seed packet or two in for you just for ordering. Nice folks, too.

I am growing sweet potatoes, something like puerto rican or something like that. I took the vines from last year, and rerooted them to get my plants for this year. Originally I took fully grown slips, and rooted them and got some nice sized potatoes. What I love about these is how long they store.

Potatoes are a real favorite around our house and we eat a lot of them all year round cooked many different ways.
I've been anxious to try all blue and all red and haven't yet because of not having a credit card with which to order a signifigant amount and no local source of seed potatoes for those types. If you folks highly reccomend them then I will definetly find a way to buy 25-50 pounds of each next spring or maybe for this fall?
My favorite from childhood and to this day is still Red Pontiac as far as an "all around" good potato. MMMMMMMMM
As far as sweet potatoes I can make a meal out of those things, around here vardaman and centiniel are the popular varieties but I really love nancy hall and Darby can not be beat for eating and cooking qualities!!!!!! Check those out if you havent. -alan

For me growing potatoes is great fun, kinda like Christmas when you uncover those spuds....a gift wrapped in dirt! Besides the kids love helping, perhaps cause it's the only time I will allow them full access to the garden beds where the potaotes are growing. All other times they MUST stay on the paths around the growing beds!!
I really like the Red Pontiac as well and they do well growing here, always a good thing. I think My fav is the Yukon Golds though, so delish!
For sweet potatoes I really like Georgia Jets. I grew a different variety last year but don't know the name of it as it was a sweet that got lost in the bin and had begun sprouting so I planted them for my crop. I'd like to try some of the others some day, but I hesitate to just order a bunch of slips when I've never tasted the variety....lots of space used if I don't care for them ya know.
