Okay - this isn't an exotic, but I have to go out to this caller's house on Friday, and I want opinions.
Got an MG call yesterday - ~ two red maples, several limbs removed due to die off, but trees still not seeming to get better at all. ~ One has a hole in the trunk, where fungus sometimes grows. ~There seem to be some areas of bug infestation, which she has had sprayed, but not sure with what. ~Trees continue to leaf out every year, although one has broken bud, and the other has not. ~She isn't sure of tree age, but thinks it's probably at least 50 years, based on when the house was built ~At least one tree has had some construction near it in the last few years - a deck was built
The symptoms, at least over the phone, sound like Maple Tree Decline to me. On the outside, I could see root girdling (limb die off, is a symptom, and she mentioned some bark that can be pulled away easily at the base of the one tree). Or fungal disease (although dependent on the kind of fungus she found, it may just be because of Decline). Can you think of anything else I should be armed with, in terms of ideas, before I head out there tomorrow?

I had the same thing happen to one of my maple trees a few years ago. I was at my local Feed and Seed Store and i asked the owner what i should do. His answer was so simple. He said to mix Quick Lime into a paste and paint it on the opening. . ( Quick Lime is not gardening lime but lime you spread over dead animals so they do not stimk as bad). The tree in 4 year has heal itself. The area that was open and starting to decay has sinse completely bark back over and the tree has quit shedding leaves.I would have never beleive it if i had not seen it with my own eyes.
