As always IBC-ABS will gettcha better translations than my fan-boy ones of Japanese-Chinese into English.
There are terms you will see if you read and fool around with little trees that often don't come with a context.
Today I bring up some size based ones.
Little is big in Bonsai. Folks like Zeko Nakamura felt that any tree bigger'n a pack of Lucky Strikes was too tall. Mame is probably one of the most often used terms for this super-small class of tree. My understanding is that works out to "more than one) fits in the palm of your hand".
The next bigger class is shohin wich is usually shorter than 16" tall and a healthy man can just hold one in his hand.
The size gradients go up by pairs of hands it takes to hold or pick up the tree, with imperial class being 8 hand bonsai.
Mame make spectacular bonsai, they are however studies in perfect watering. If you cannot get out to water up to eight times a day in the summer, try shohin sized trees.
