Received two bulb catalogs yesterday. It has been suggested that I plant daffodils, because of our gopher problem. Could daffodils be arranged in a circle around tulips and the tulip bulbs be protected?

Mike - I'm not sure that would work, but it can't hurt too much to try it. Just save the experiment for easily replaced tulip bulbs, just in case!
I have a friend who sinks a wire basket, and plants her tulip bulbs within the confines. She uses a basket that the roots can grow through, but which deters tunneling pests. I've seen the basket idea promoted for tulips that don't overwinter well, too.
