I really liked Roots Demystified by Kourik: www.robertkourik.com/books/roots.htmlLots of pictures of the root structure of vegetables and information about root growth. And it's available at the Ottawa Library for those nearby.

Damn women, they always find a way to cost us money. I ordered it.

It really is a great book so it's money well spend in my opinion. Besides what else you gonna do but review your planting plants, package and finish drying seeds, think about future experiments, write gardening notes, scan seed catalogues, start... okay so there's lots to do in winter.

LOL, I always seem to think of winter as my vacation, but increasingly so over the past couple of years the workload has seemed to have doubled. Two greenhouses full of strawberries and tomatoes and then the chickens and guineas and a couple of fields full of greens, turnips, and lettuces keep me busy as can be coupled with maintaining this site, harvesting and packaging seeds and sending them out to others.

And I was gonna get rid of some of my gardening books, another one that is irresitstable - wow- roots!!!
Geeese Alan, you are busy. I would love to have some guineas someday. Can you house them with chickens? I have to have fairly impenetrable pens due to racoons.

Swiss, I have a friend in Missouri who has housed Guinea Fowl with chickens for many years. I have pics here somewhere of them co-habitating. I will see if I can find one to post. Found it!! Michel, Ottawa Gardener DID mention that it was available from the Library system in the city....You could have simply borrowed it from the Library and saved Money doing so. Spending Money unnecessarily...How Very like a Man

Great pen! Thanks for that info!!!
Just thought of another question. Do they go in the hutch at night like chickens- sound slike they want to roost in trees instead- with racoons I can not have that of course.

Swiss, sorry I didn't notice your question a month back. Yeah, you're right. Keep them out of the trees cuz that's where they will go given the opportunity, only to end up being raccoon rarebit.
But back to Books!
We were in Chapters yesterday looking around for a few last minute Christmas gift items and they had the lamest selection of gardening books I've seen in a long time? I couldn't find a section specifically for gardening books and the Lifestyle section that encompassed Knitting/Crocheting/Lawn Furniture/Gardening/ just didn't have anything that said "buy me...pulleeeez" I miss living near decent booksellers....That's all about to change!
For those in the Ottawa area, there is a bookstore beside the Byward Market that has beautiful looking gardening books in French. Unfortunately, I am far from bilingual so I am just going by the pretty pictures on the covers of the books in the window.

We have 11 nieces and nephews, last year we bought all of them gift cards to Borders bookstore, with the promise that we would take them out to eat and to use their cards whenever they wanted. Husband didn't think little kids would like it, but they all loved it so we did it again this year. We are going to try a 1 year old, 2 year old and 4 year old all at once. I think we can, I think we can.....

Hey Swiss Chard, sorry I missed your questions.
Anyhow, yeah, I keep my Guineas with my Chickens and they get along reasonably well, mine haven't taken to the trees yet but I only recently started letting them free range as they were still pretty young, so far so good, though I hear that in warmer weather they will venture out on their own and will take to the trees.

We cut their wing tips to make sure they did not became summer ''wild birds'' and ended up in the stomach of a fox or worse, dying of cold in the fall...

Mine thus far seem pretty content to believe that they are chickens, hopefully it will stay that way and they will continue to follow the chickens around.

have they started laying yet alan? that's when the males start getting possessive of the females and fights ensue...at least that was what happened here.

It's also when they'll have a go at you. Friends had guineas for a while to keep snakes out of the yard (they will not tolerate snakes in their territory) because they had young kids. Only trouble was, the kids couldn't go into the yard when the females were nesting as the males would fly at them and they can give a nasty scratch. One by one they were guests at Sunday lunch!
The book's a great find. Thanks.
