www.theextremegardener.comOK - so I finally found the place to make introductions. This Forum is huge, and it's going to take me a while to get to all the stuff I want to read and respond to here, but... HELLLLOOO everybody! I'm in a zone 3-4 location in Vermont , USA. I started seed saving around 1980, and besides maintaining heirlooms I collected in the area, I specialize in breeding by neglect and abuse subjecting plants to rigorous conditions. My primary technique is to fling lots of different seeds at the gardens, and see what survives. My goal is to naturalize as many things I can eat as possible. This would be a lot easier if I wasn't a vegetarian... Present projects include naturalizing sugarloaf chicories, and one of my major garden fantasies is to develop a totally hardy, disease resistant BIG (well, at least medium sized) multiplying storage onion. Oh, self-peeling, too, while we're at it.... Leigh

Hello Leigh ... very nice website you've got there. I love those potatoes ... I grow a variety called Shetland Black which is unmistakably similar (has the small foliage and the purple vascular ring) so I wonder if it's the same or closely related to your original parent variety. Mine rarely produces seedballs though, and only flowers when it feels like it. It's good to see another vegetarian here too.

Sounds like it could be the same spud, the Blue Shetlands have very dark violet skin, so I could imagine someone calling them black. Your question has inspired me to consult my Grubb & Guilford "The Potato" to see if I can find anything on their lineage chart. I'll post more in the potato section... see you there Leigh

Bah! Compared to us Blue, she lives in the tropics! ;D
Speaking of blue/black, I have some pretty darn dark ones in Tom's tubers I grew this year...
