It's probably the "nobin" part of your screen-name that lodges itself in people's brains. Wait a minute, is that a weed I can see out there in the darkness, scraping its horrible icky tendrils on my window? Aaaaaaaaaargh, it's coming to get me!

Karen, that was long before I (we) retired and I lived in an agricultural area of Northern Alberta. An yes they do have weed inspectors. Some good (like the one that serviced our area) and some that shall we say weren't quite up to par.

Run Rebsie and 'Karen (so sorry, Rebsie's right - silly brain)', run before the weeds take over the world! Have you watched the movie 'the happening' about toxins released by plants to remove the noxioius human threat? It's worth a laugh. Best while impaired... chocolate milk or whatever your poison

Hi everyone! I'm new here and still a novice to the homegrown garden movement, as it were, but I just thought I'd add my 2 cents worth. While this "Cassandra" person is clearly ignorant of a lot of things, it seems that should those evil weed seeds find their way into some homegrown seed packets, that there could be a way of maintaining some kind of "quality control". One of the benefits of a close-knit seed trading community like this is that there is frequent communication between everyone, which I would think (or hope) helps to keep everyone honest. I dunno, maybe some kind of rating or feedback system (ala that 4 letter online auction site ). Would it be fair to blacklist someone who sent you crappy seeds or routinely promises to send seeds and then doesn't deliver? Are there a set of ethics for trading sites like this? Even if seeds do find their way into your seed mixes then I doubt it would be intentional. If you're starting your seeds outside then how would it even be possible to figure out if the weeds were blown in on their own or came from the seed packets? My garden is always plagued with all sorts of funky weeds, some are quite stunning and beautiful and others just a neverending pain to deal with year after year. Where they come from, who knows? P.S. Speaking of neverending pains...if anyone has any desire for morning glory, my yard is always overrun with it...no matter how much of it I rip out every year. I don't know what variety it is, but it's bright pink/magenta with a white center. ;D

A ratings system isn't too awful bad an idea, but I'm not sure if it is warranted, I'm pretty sure as a "good faith" system we usually tend to rouge out those unsavory characters that would send us bad seeds or even noxious seeds.
I will say this, Cassandra was one of three things, a plant as I first stated (given her strong language), an uninformed and ego-centric non-gardener, or the new theory I'm floating around.......for those who remember, is it possible that this is.....Zebra Man?

I could see getting weed seeds when u trade divisions & some flower seed. But how are weed seeds gonna get in a tomato, pumpkin, bean....? I have never gotten any weeds in any trades I have done. Uh oh, I sent American Gardener garlic. Could I have sent him a noxious weed by accident? lol

Zebra Man? Hmm, I think I've seen that name on other forums. What's the story behind Zebra Man?

FP.. it is possible to get weed seeds in tomatoes. I remember when i was first learning how to process tomato seeds.. i'd ferment them out in the garden in a five gallon bucket.. then i'd dry them on black plastic out in the sun. I got quite a few seeds that looked to be crapgrass or some kinds of grass seed from the wind blowing them around and either landing in the bucket or on the drying sheets. Course it was obvious they didn't belong there and i didn't send any weed seeds mixed in with my tomatoes when i did go and trade those. But, i can see where field processed seeds might get some wind blown native weeds mixed in.
I doubt anyone would let it slip past the packaging stage.. perhaps if it were something like carrots or lettuce seed it might.. but even then that "Casandra" wasn't specific to any certain types of seeds except to say we're fond of trading pansys. Whatever that means.

I don't think there is any doubt in our minds that this Cassandra person is probably a full blooded relation of Carolyn M.

I also liked the part where she pretended to be a plant breeder and would give her material. That's the usual way of the breeders of course.
And also the main purpose of breeding: not having anybody use it....

I realy don't get it Michael. Dr Male has been a trader for quite a while. I don't see the connection here...

About the only thing in Cassandra's diatribe that I can understand from a plant lovers point of view is her hatred for knotweed. Anyone who knows anything about what they are planting (on the scale that we do it) should be able to recognize if the seed looks right for what they are planting. The rest of her gabble wakes up the Viking portion of my Scots heritage, and wants me to go berserker and froth at the mouth for a while. So I won't comment any farther. ;D

MJ.. i don't think it'd be Carolyn.
Like Michel says she does trade seeds. Maybe not on the scale some of us do.. but i've heard she does trade seeds over at garden web. Then it's not her writing style. So, i guess it's gotta be someone else. And she would take Alan up on a debate i'm sure.
If it were her.. she'd of really had to dumb it down. I don't even beleive she would say something like that anyways. But, i'm not gonna rack my brain trying to figure out who it is.

That's the usual way of the breeders of course. I agree with that, Michel. We also have some specimen like that on this side this of the Atlantic ocean. "Bien faire et laisser braire" (Do well and let bray ?)

Cassandra is definitely not Carolyn. She would not hide behind an alias if she had something to say. And I seriously doubt CM would write anything against seed saving, even as a joke. Let's not worry too much about who this Cassandra may be. She is more than welcome to join the forums and discuss our evilness. lol
AG, ok I see what you mean about the outdoor fermentation. Thanks
