Hello from rural south/central Virginia! We live on 75 acres and love all forms of gardening (as time permits) and rural life in general. We have day jobs (office) but also raise a few beef cattle.
I hope to be posting lots and enjoy reading other members' postings!

Welcome Elizabeth. When Dave and Michel say they have seeds to spare, you better believe them. Mikey, You got snow?? It's been raining here for hours and it's rapidly becoming one big skating rink.

Here too, but there was 70cm of snow...there is still plenty, there is a shiny covering of ice and it slides on top of it...

Thank you for making me feel so welcome! I am such an amateur compared to the rest of you! But I'm hoping to learn as I go along and enjoy myself in the process! As you can see by my icon, feel free to send the snow my way ... we get maybe one or two mild snows a year so it's novel to me. A cause for celebration! e

Ah, Elizabeth, a woman with a most IMPRESSIVE name!
Of course, that is also my given name... AND I just moved to California from VA. (So wierd! When I saw your post this morning, I had not had my coffee yet, and was concerned that I had a second personality that was posting on east coast time.) You'll need to pardon any old posts of mine wherein I made any disparaging remarks about Virginia. I was not from there, and therefore could have been from Mars as far as most of the locals were concerned. (Especially as I have a good old Yankee upbringing!)
We lived in Luray, up in Page County. (You know, where the County Sheriff got in deep doo-doo over the cock fighting bribes, and the Feds crawl all over the place!) It's really a beautiful area of the country. Sounds like you've got some great land to play with. So, what do you want to grow? Or, what are you growing?

Hello lavandulagirl! Don't worry about any remarks you may have made about Virginia ... I've lived here all my life and I know the good and the bad. I've only been to Page County once and that was to visit Luray Caverns. I was lured there by tantalizing advertisements along the roadside ... I was helpless against their allure! But I wasn't as smitten by the caverns as I had expected to be ... life can be so full of disappointments!
I'm further south, in Amelia County. What county are you in now in CA?
As for what we grow, dabble may be a better word. We've tried most vegetables, flowers, bushes and trees ... variety is the spice of life, or maybe I'm just unfocused ... or haven't found my niche yet. Humor me!

Yeah, we went to the Caverns, and while it was sort of neat, I was actually glad that Page County residents get in for free. The locals mostly went for the Cavern Cafe's deep fried pickles. I kid you not. As a Connecticut Yankee, I could not fathom those, pink pickled eggs, or shelf stable ham sandwiches. (The later two available at every convenience and Mom and Pop store in VA... it's like a state law or something that there be salt cured ham, on hamburger buns, wrapped in plastic wrap with a sharpie marker "$1.00" scrawled on the top on the counter near the lottery machine!)
We're in El Dorado County, now. In the Sierra Foothills. Totally different than VA, but pretty as well. I'm actually excited about maybe being able to grow melons well here. In Page County, the clay soil and cool spring and fall conspired against me.
Do you sell your beef? On the hoof or off?
