Oh no, Marjeta! You remind me of what I consider one of the worst decisions I've ever made--passing up on the chance to travel and stay in Slovenia (expenses paid). I have regretted it ever since. Have you ever met Americans associated with Vermont College? Students go over there every summer to study with other writers. I'm almost positive the location was right at Lake Bled. Anyhoo, welcome!!

Hey moonlilyhead. How come you didn't go? I actually never met Americans associated with Vermont College (not with others either). Lake Bled is not so close to me and I must say it's been 2 years since I've last been there. But it sure is a nice location for foreign students. The capital (with most of the faculties) is not so attractive in the summer, since you don't have any "water" to refresh yourself (except the swimming pools). If you ever decide to go on a holiday to Slovenia you now have a contact.

Well, even though the trip was paid for via a grant, I just couldn't afford to take off two weeks without pay at that time. But after my friends came back and told me how terrific and gorgeous it was, I wish I would have taken some sort of drastic measure to go! Live and learn, I suppose.

Well I guess it is now my turn to introduce myself as well. My name is Iva, and just as Marjeta, I'm also from Slovenia. I'm the recruit she was talking about ... I have a great passion for tomatoes and all that's green. I've been growing veggies for the past six years, before that I even didn't have a garden to start with, because we were living in a block of flats. But when we moved to a house with some land, my dreams of having a garden finally came true. And that is when the passion started. At first, I was only trying to get a hold of some yellow tomatoes that I remembered from my youth, as my grandma used to raise them in her garden. Here in our seed stores, you can only get a couple of varieties and all are red, so you don't have many choices. I decided to go online in search of 'good old yellow tomatoes'. That is how I discovered the world of colors that I never in my dreams expected. Here were all these tomatoes, green, white, orange, bi color and even black. I was amazed... And so my journey started: first I only ordered a couple weird colored tomatoes but I quickly got addicted to them as not only their beauty, but also the different flavors got me hooked. Now I have around 130 varieties of tomatoes in my collection that keeps getting bigger every year. Most seeds I purchased and some I got in trades. I even traded with Val, who is also a member of this forum (Hi, Val!) Anyhow, I'm glad I can join this forum as all of you seem very nice and full of knowledge. If anyone will be interested in my tomatoes (and other veggies) I will be happy to share the seeds... Lep pozdrav (greetings in Slovene)

Lep pozdrav, Iva, Glad you made it to our little family of gardening people. You are more than welcome here and I hope that you will join in our forums and enrich everyone else with your knowledge on any subject. As I told Marjeta, you are welcome to any of our seeds and if you go to the blogsite, grungysgarden you can seed our albums, and if you want anything and if we still have seed available feel free to ask. We love to see our seed going out all over the world. And as anyone here can tell you, we are also looking for OP's - Heirlooms from all over to grow out and add to our little seed bank.
Again welcome and come visit Bishop's Homegrown Goodeness often.
Cheers, Val PS. Love the pictures of Slovenia. It is a beautiful country.

Hi, Iva. Does Novo Mesto mean something like "New town"? Looks a little like nowe miasto from when I had two semesters of Polish class 27 years ago. john

Lep pozdrav to you too, Dave. I am also glad to finally join you...
John, that's exactly what it means, new town (although it isn't at all new, it has a rich history). Polish has some similarities with Slovene although not many. But it is fun to be able to understand at least a few words...

Good evening Marjeta. 200 tomato varieties!! WOW. Seriously impressed. I normally try about 50 or so varieties, but I am a little restricted with space with only 2 allotments. I only grow a few squash plants as, if they had their own way, they would take over the universe, so I am trying desperately to successfully grow melons this year. Can't wait to hear all about your toms.

Dave, thanks for the seeds. I can't wait to get them! I'm sure they'll make it in time. Emmajane, thanks. There are some individuals that have muuuuuuch mooooooore tomato varieties, like Dave (over 1000). Let me know if you'd like to try new varieties next year. I'll post my squash list soon, I only need to organize it better.
