And I've been inspired by the Mother Earth grow your own food magazine. I saw a cherry tomato plant growing out of a 1 gallan olive oil jug. So these formula can are getting spray painted, drilled for drainage and getting 1 very dwarf tomato plant per can. I'm going to attach them to my split rail fence with pipe banding for the summer.

Sounds good and a very imaginative way to use those formula cans...I grow lots of things in containers myself and I very seldom throw anything away until i figure out if there is some way i can use it in the garden..I wouldn't mind having formula cans right now, they are the perfect size for anything that is on the small size.My thing right now is the 3 lb red and blue plastic coffee cans for the tomatoes that are small..Last year i grew several dwarf tomatoes in them and they did just great...Only problem is that they dry out very fast and you have to check them often. And virtually no backbreaking weeding..Lots of luck with the formula cans and post a picture when you can,I'd like to see how you set them up on your fence...Give us all some ideas we can use..Dawn

You could always put something like franch Marigolds in a formula can. Put a few alyssum too, so you have something that hangs down. You will prolly have to water maters every day.

Greeneyes & FP,
I'm not so much into flowers.....but I figured that I'd have to water daily for the maters. Thats fine with me. I was thinking I'd drill drainage holes about an inch and a half above the bottom so the bottom of the soil would stay more moist and hopefully wick up the soil........

Go for it! It'll be an interesting experiment. It's not like you don't have a few extra mater seeds you could spare.

No kidding. I've got enough seed to feed the US army. I really want to grow out and segregate the LISP mix so I can share more seed. I'd like to get enough to send to Grunt and Grungy to bank and or distribute...ect.

And a couple of your "little big sprout" Sam wouldn't be sneezed at either. I imagine he's getting to be a right big fellow. Has he tried walking yet?

He's darned close to walking. He'll stand there playing a minute before he realizes he's not holding on.
