When it comes to carrot rust fly, I sometimes get it in my carrots and other root crops and sometimes not. I was just reading Stevil's thread on here which mentions that Caraway is not affected. For what it's worth, I am interested in Fennel as a root crop and I've never seen tunnel marks on it either, nor Parsley root. Parsnip is also barely affected.
I've heard that combining alliums with apiaceae reduces the incident of root damage on both of these and had been considering interplanting for that purpose. Anyone have any exerpiences with this technique or others? I'm especially interested in interplanting.
I've also read that combining carrots with cosmos or other annual flower seeds can work.

Timing of your planting also plays a role. Plant the portion of your carrots that will get consumed before fall at your normal planting time, and consider them to be your "sacrificial" or trap crop and use it for summer eats. Plant your winter keepers about the end of June, mulch fairly heavily, and do not pull any from its ranks over the course of its growing season. If you can, dig them out and trench store them for winter use. Once they lose intimate contact with the soil, they are of no interest to the larva. Cheers
