I've got 2 3x8 foot raised beds that get some decent sun and this week they are going to be the lucky recipients of some lisp kale mix, some chard, and some beets....I'm excited. I don't care if its still early.. I'm going in.

I already started some broccoli- Di Cicco, Early Purple Sprouting, and Romanesco. The purple seed is from '06. Not even one seed came up. Ooh, I forgot to start the Broccoli Rabe. lol

I'm revising my statement...I'm starting seed for the kale and chard. The beet seeds and radish seeds I'll direct seed. Either way I'm a moving. I'll take some pics today of my other little seedlings...I love seeing the green.

Houseodyssey sent me some seeds for the Romanesco. She said they were a lil old and plant them all. So far I have about 50% germination which is more than enough plants. Thanks, House.

That is one fine looking plant. I saw them at the store but haven't tried one yet. Is it more broccoli or cauliflower like as far as taste??

flowerpower, we planted some Di Cicco the year before last and it grew to a giant size, with big leaves, but never developed any heads. the stems were huge too. i'll be curious to see how yours grow.
lucky you and your planting jim! we still got a bunch of snow in the gardens!!!

I have no clue on how Romanesco tastes. I saw it at a farm market and thought it looked weird. I don't like either broccoli or cauliflower. It's for my BF and my friends. If I can get seed from it, I will grow it in my flower beds next yr. lol I grew the De Cicco last yr. I did get a small head fromone of the six I planted. But it wasn't the greatest yr for the garden. I heard it had a nice taste, which is why I am growing it again. Ususally I plant the waltham and get nice big heads and tons of sideshoots. If you want seeds for the Rabe, let me know.

I am not a fan of chard. My FIL grows it. I should get him the rainbow mix next yr. That orange is really nice. Would the chickens find it tasty?

FP, not only will they eat it, but it's very good for them. And turkeys too, so be sure to give some to J, And Bambi will be certain to come to dinner if you grow fancy chards..I've already had her standing at my window trying to get a closer look at the seedlings inside..grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I'm growing Ruby Chard this year. It's just gorgeous, even as little 2 inch plantlets... Fulenn, were all the colours in the Rainbow mix as vibrant as the Ruby and the Orange??

Yes, the colors are great, but I didn't have any yellow come up. I only have a few, so..... I have one more that decided to try looking around several days ago, but I can't tell what color it is yet. I don't have chickens, but my cats love to eat them when they have just sprouted. Thus the smaller amount than I planted. Fulenn
