Iwill be growing 30 or so corns this summer. I obtained 500 seeds of most of these corn from Grin-USA, and some from Grin-CA, and someothers through here ans SSE, enough to start viable populations, that I will later cross with very high protein and oil content, aiming at the smallest plant possible with good production. The idea behind smaller plants is that it opens opportunities for more fabacae for interplanting while minimizing nitrogen intake.
I have taken a small amount of the seeds to create a genepool. I will add some corns I ordered from SSE and will add them to the list once I get them.
The people of Grin have been very nice to permit me to get seeds for viable populations. A huge thanks to them.
Of course, I will be offering the seeds here. With 500 plants of mostly multiple ears accessions, I should be OK to spare 2-3 seeds with you folks ;D
Here are some details on the project:
MICHEL LACHAUME'S FEED CORN PROJECT 1
OBJECTIVES
Create then stabilize a genepool of feed corns of all types, dent, flint, flour, sweet and all intermediary type that is high in anthocyanines, protein content, oil content ( easier for the animal to transform in energy than starch) that is early and of the smallest plant size possible to minimize nitrogen intake and augment possiblities of intercropping with nitrogen fixing crops, and that necessitate the minimum soil work possible.
GENETIC LINES SELECTED
ASTRONOMY DOMINE
Gene pool created by Alan Bishop from Pekin, IN with over 40 heirloom corns, many indians, selected for anthocyanins.
PAINTED MOUNTAIN CORN
Created by David Christensen of Montana over 30 years from over 1000 native and commercial corns.
High level of proteins: 13%. Extremely cold and draught tolerant
ILLINOIS HIGH OIL
Selected over 62 generations over high oil content. White dent.
SU SMOLICE
From Poland. Very high oil content: 15.1% . Highly shrunken sweet corn
ALEXHO SK SYNTHETIC C-20
Selected for high oil content: 13.2%. Yellow amber dent.
ILLINOIS HIGH PROTEIN LOT 1
Selected over 62 generations for exceedingly high protein content: 24% White dent
CG HOPE ELITE A
From Canada, selected for high production in short season. Semi-dent
CG HOPE ELITE B
From Canada, selected for high production in short season. Dent, but despite description also with flint and flour.
CORNELL COLD TOLERANT SYNTHETIC NO 1
Mix of early cold tolerant selections. Yellow dent/semi-dent
NEBRASKA EARLY COMPOSITE
Selection for early dents, white and yellow
PURPLE HUSK RAINBOW INDIAN
Northern flint selected for high anthocyanins and large ears.
SELECTION FROM APACHE RED COB
Flour corn selected for very high anthocyanins.
VIR 11076
Very early white flint from Belarus
CHAKINSKAYA ZHEMCHUZHIN
From former Soviet Union. Very early white flint, 2 ears.
MILLERSBURG RED SWEET 2
Selected for anthocyanins
WHITE FLINT
From South Africa. Selected for large multiple ears ( 2 to 5)
KOSMAJ
From Serbia and Montenegro. White flint with 2 to 4 ears
BRUCKER GELBER LANDMAS
From Austria. Very early yellow flint/dent corn with 2 to 3 ears
W-C 1082
From Peru, variation on Kculli corn. Late, to be started in cells. Selected for the highest anthocyanins and medicinal properties.
DWARF GASPÉ
Very early dwarf yellow flint from Quebec, one of the earliest to ripen in the world.
TAUN 23
From China.Yellow popcorn/flint, multiple ears
LUO 3
From China. Yellow flint, multiple ears
WHITE RICE POP
White popcorn, multiple ears
SHAMAN 'S BLUE
Selected for high anthocyanins and multiple ears
A small number of various seed of sweet corns from Europe, Mexico and the USA have been added to the mix, around 10 seeds only each, because they were received from Gatersleben ( german genebank) in too small quantities to grow viable populations, but are interesting enough to add genetic diversity.
